This article just appeared on Yahoo, and I copied the first part of the article primarily to show everyone what appears to me to be blatant propaganda in the guise of putting out a title of an article as if a political person of interest had done something wrong. What do the rest of you think?

State Opens Records on Miers As Gun Owner By JIM VERTUNO, Associated Press Writer

AUSTIN, Texas - Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, who once owned a .45-caliber revolver, is not licensed to carry a concealed handgun in Texas. State officials refused Monday to reveal whether she has ever been licensed.

Miers' brother gave her the Smith & Wesson handgun when he was worried about her living alone in Dallas. Judge Nathan Hecht of the Texas Supreme Court, a longtime friend of Miers', has said she kept the gun for a long time.

State law requires the release of information about license holders but not former license holders, said Pamela Smith, assistant general counsel for the agency.

A person in Texas can own a gun without a concealed handgun license. Texas is one of 43 states that allow concealed weapons, and more than 230,000 residents are registered under the law.

The Texas state archives on Monday released thousands of pages of documents related to Miers' days as chairwoman of the Texas Lottery Commission, from 1995 to 2000, and her correspondence with then-Gov. George W. Bush.

As for as MS. Meirs is concerned the question should be, "is she qualified to set on the bench of the highest court in this land???"
With no prior experience as a Judge, even though that might be a good thing, one must seriously doubt it.:D

Xavierbreath, there is no particular link, but if you go on the Yahoo homepage and dig around the news area, they should have the article there. It was posted just yesterday.

Now that I have read between the lines, of course this (non)-"issue" was made into an article to get anti's fired up (no pun intended) that this nominee for the Supreme Court was a gun owner herself, and that she would most likely go that way in her views and opinions. The article itself was written in a way that made me say, "what was the writer trying to say?" Of course we can, and should, all see for ourselves what the intended point was.

As far as her qualifications, I don't think that she has enough experience; make that NO experience, as a sitting judge, to sit on the highest court. That is just my opinion...

I have no facts to back up the following statement, just repeating what I've heard elsewhere *end disclaimer*

Appointing people with judicial experience is a relatively new idea, IIRC the current trend started with Rehnquist. Prior to that you had a lot of judges appointed to the USSC that were not actual judges beforehand.

No, there is no licensing requirement to own or purchase a gun in Texas. From what I remember, the information about her owning a gun was given to the press from friends/family members.

Records of Concealed Handgun Licenses in Texas are, however, not private. If I want to know if Harriet Miers has a CHL, I can request that information from DPS and I will be told yes or no. Sounds like a reporter did that.

"I'm concerned that gun owners are on a government list."

Don't be silly ---------- of COURSE we are on a list. Lots of them in fact.

Let me see:

1. NRA Life member -- check.
2. CHL holder -- check.
3. C&R license holder -- check.
4. Post to firearms forums -- check.
5. Write irate letters to politicians urging them to follow the constitution -- check.
6. Contribute money to NRA, GAO, etc. -- check.
7. Purchase guns from dealers and wholesalers -- check.
8. Purchase case-lots of ammunition from on-line sources -- check.
9. Subscription to various gun-rags at times -- check.
10. Membership at gun clubs -- check.

And the list goes on -- just got tired of writing. Point is, I am on everyones list as a big time gun-nut, so I just don't worry about it anymore. I just use the old 'hide-in-plain site' approach.
