State Laws

I have nothing against people asking questions, yet, there are allot of them that ask "this and that" when it comes to transferring, having, or selling/having certain types of guns in their states.

Not to be mean or demeaning but folks, most states (actually I think all), have a site that states the statues of the state that you live in. In Oregon, we go to 166.*** to find our gun laws as well as our knife laws. We read this and get some clarification on what we can, and cannot do.

People, in order to answer some of your questions, you must use your time to go to your state laws, read them through, and then ask questions of your states reps and AG to find out if what you wish to do, can or cannot be done.

I'm not trying to be a butt hole here, I'm just trying to get you to learn and then interrupt the laws of your state.. When I first came to Oregon and Eugene I did searches on the law, called the sheriffs department, and asked the locals what they knew of the law.

As a result, knowing the law, I don't have to ask if I can own this or that gun, I know how to go about owning this or that gun (mainly talking about class III's here), I know that I can shoot in my backyard, I know that I can own a XM-15 with all the "evil features" intact, I know that I can own and carry an auto knife, and overall, I know the laws of the state that I live in.

As soon as I set foot upon this isle, I made the phone calls and after I got hooked up with internet, studied on my own.

Most to all states have the laws or statutes posted on the web. This is the first place that you go. The second is the Sheriffs office, and the last place is to a general board that covers all 50 states, European countries, and even more so.

Sorry for the rant, but what I am saying is to study, learn, and then make your decision. The computer is a great place to meet others, but it also makes an awesome tool when trying to learn about the state that you reside in, including its laws.

*sorry to be a butt hole.

In WA, RCW 9.41 covers guns and possesion.

I know what your saying.. I think some stuff gets redundant when you can just use google or the search function here on the forums..

You rarely hear or see the word butt hole used in today's conversation. It is such a great word that does not come across as too harsh.

I pulled a newbie move by asking my question that I could have easily found the answer for. On other boards I have been a member of for years, it has always bothered me when people did exactly what I just did. Sorry for not at least doing most of the footwork myself before asking my question.

Thanks for setting me straight :)

It's not that people aren't willing to help, it's just that the questions have been answered so many times. Use the forum search button. Better yet, use google. Try searching for "yourstate gun laws"
You'll find everything you need.

Ravenslair,

I was just trying to get people, especially new gun owners, to take the time to learn for themselves some of the questions that they ask. It's easy to get bad information from a generalized group of people that don't live in the askers state.

I think that it's the responsibility of every gun owner, new and old, to know the laws pertaining to firearms/knives in their state.

Not only is it good practice to do so but it also allows them to actually read the laws of their state and maybe get fired up to do something about them (like get them repealed) and join their states grassroots organization.

It also shows that the gun owner and member of that state has taken the responsibility to be law-abiding which may take some wind out of the anti-gunners sails when they see that you are up on the law.

As I said, in no way am I trying to demean anyone and in the future if any generalized questions are asked I will try to help if I am familiar with the laws (right now, only Oregon) as best I can but it's better for a person to familiarize themselves instead of taking the word of over 4,000+ members that could be wrong (accidentally). :)

Then again, maybe they are just too lazy.

Why go to the exhaustive steps of actually RESEARCHING your question when you can clutter up a board with it?

Packing.org is an obvious site to check, complete with FAQ and chart sections. The state websites, as noted, will provide access to the general laws/statutes. Even running the SEARCH function on these boards would work for most questions. However, all require a minimal amount of intelligence and initiative, qualities that are already lacking and becoming more scarce.

I am happy to answer a legitimate question, or at least give someone some help in the right direction so they can find the answer. Simply accommodating the inert is intellectual welfare; they learn nothing more than the delusion that, like other welfare, it is something the lazy and ignorant are "entitled" to. :barf: :barf:

Number 6,

I wouldn't quite go that far in my assumptions. Many people who are new to the boards and gun ownership don't know where to look or that www.packing.org exists.

That is why I put the friendly reminder on the board that says the first place that a person should go is to their own state's laws and web page before coming to a generalized board which does have great information and knowledge but may accidentally misspeak on a certain point of the law which may get them into trouble.
