STATE DEPT MEMO: DEATH OF US SAILORS DOES NOT COMPARE TO PALESTINIAN TOLL

The United States State Department believes the "17 or so dead sailors" on the U.S.S. Cole "does not compare to the 100+ Palestinians who have died in recent weeks" in Mideast violence, a stunning government memo reveals.

MORE

The Clinton/Gore Administration disapproved a VOICE OF AMERICA broadcast condemning the attack on the Cole. A memo from the Executive Secretariat Staff at the State Department stated:

"The Department of State does not clear on the referenced VOA editorial.

"This editorial will reach an audience that is caught up in the violence in Israel and the Occupied Territories. The 17 or so dead sailors does not compare to the 100+ Palestinians who have died in recent weeks where we have remained silent. The people that hear this will not see the separation we are trying to make and relate it directly to the violence.

"Either VOA adds something in there to take the edge off and mention the Palestinians or we should kill this editorial until the violence has calmed for a while.

"S/CT [Secy. for counterterrorism] concurred with this. If you have questions concerning this editorial, please contact NEA/P (unintelligible)

Remember George, when we sign that paper and raise our right hand we give up our civil rights and become expendable Government Issue equipment. That way the government doesn't have to feel bad when they leave our brothers behind in places like Korea, Viet Nam and other places, named or not. This is exactly what we can expect from our government, especially from the Bill (I had to hide in England to avoid being drafted) Clinton/Al (I can't even produce one picture of myself in Viet Nam, but I invented the Internet.) Gore administration.

Edited for spelling.

Youre surprised by this tone??? When in the hisotry of politicians have the regular people mattered?? Aside from election years, that is. Heck I have come to accept that the current government of the USA cares more about a good, sloppy BJ than they do about the people. Reason #1 why I decided to stop trying to serve my politicians. I do my civic duty and that is all now.

I am seeing so much red right now, I can't see straight. INSIGNIFICANT!?!?!?! INSIGNIFICANT!?!?!?! I'll give them insignificant. I served three years active duty and am now in the National Guard. I do this for my government and this is how they repay us.

This crap kinda reminds me of the overall attitude that was prevalent in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Remember, Viet Nam vets?
Yeah.....it sucks today too.
The more things change, the more they remain the same. :(

In the interest of accuracy:

To say that the State Department said that the dead sailors are "not significant" is a very deep paraphrase. What the memo actually said was that, to Palestinians, 17 dead American soldiers do not compare with the more than 100 Palestinians who have died in a conflict that, as of yet, has not ended.

This memo concerns a Voice Of America broadcast, and the author is just correct, any way you look at it. Palestinians have their own problems right now, problems that look graver than those concerning the Cole. VOA is simply trying to reach their target audience and seem relevant.

This memo, therefore, is not commenting on the significance or insignificance of the dead sailors. It is simply pointing out the truth.

Don't let this turn into another urban myth. In debate such inflations make one look foolish.

Your clarification does nothing to minimise the fact that the deaths of US personal were downplayed.
Urban myth my devil dog butt! They simply veiw us as numbers.

OK, if our men and women are expendable, I suggest we formally surrender, withdraw from world politics and let everyone kill each other. It's not worth a single drop of American blood. However, if we were to lose blood, let it be that of the politicians. Besides, what loss would that be?

I am sorry but the Palestinians who died "ARE NOT OUR OWN" but those sailors were, so in my book the Palestinians don't count as much. (They started the trouble in the Middle East, it wasn’t the sailors on the USS COLE they just got caught up in the middle of it) It seems the powers that be will only be happy, if during the next war, our casualty rates keep pace with the enemies. I always thought the object was "Make the other poor dumb bastard die for his country"

With all due respect, I really dont give a rats a$$ how many Palestinians, Israelis, Serbs, Croats, Kosovars, Albanians, Somalis, Haitians... get wiped off the face of the planet so long as not a single hair on an Americans body is harmed. To me they are the meaningless ones and not American service men. EVER. The ONLY reason this issue of the middle east blowing itself up interests me is because American interest and lives could be harmed by it. If we weren't dependent on Arab oil as much, nor be targeted by terrorist attacks for our support of one side, nor get sucked into sending troops there to bleed and die, nor worry about the idiots nuking each other and poisoning a good part of the world in the process, I could care less what they did to each other. The world is over populated as is. If a group of people are stupid enough to want to eliminate themselves, then let them do it.

Why not?

We need to stop being the worlds' policemen. The world doesn't want us to be anyway.

Department of Defence. Not Department of Fairness!

Palestinians... Screw Them! We are talking about our own US Servicemen. These guys are our SONS! I don't care if the PLO kick there butts kicked and lost 100 or 100,000. They chose to fight in that retarded thousand year old conflict. If I was in charge of Isreal - I'ld round them all up and push them all across the border. They come back they get shot. If they resist - they get turned to red goo.

These sailors that got killed... bombed... Our Countries Sons. If even ONE US Citizen get ****ed with - there should be hell to pay. This administration has no nuts. Makes me sick. Oh - I bet if Rosie was on that ship Slurping outta the grease traps no doubt - and she got blown up? How the media would HOWL!

I agree, Shin-Tao. This whole affair is a direct consequence of our trying to be the world's policeman. But as long as we do have troops overseas, how smart is it to throw diplomacy to the winds?

I'm pretty well POed my ownself at the whole deal.

But this ain't really the place to vent, is it?

Valium, anybody?
