starting out

I started my son out at about 8. Then he made some really poor choices and hasn't been in a while....

I started shooting at 6 or 7.

My kids aren't old enough yet but my dad started me off with a bb gun at 7 and worked me up from there. I think by 10 or 11 I had my first high powered centerfire. And that season my first deer :) I dont really know if there's a "right" age for it. A lot of it depends on the kid. If they're ready, they're ready.

Started my boys on a BB gun at 5 and 3. They really enjoy it but we haven't moved up to anything larger yet. Bought a Marlin 15YN .22lr for my oldest boy and I'll probably get him started on that at the end of this school year (he'll be 7 by then). Little guy will have to wait a bit before he'll be on a .22.

I started when I as 4 or 5 with a single shot .22lr. Only went out a time or two. Then when I was probably 6 I got a BB gun and we shot it in our back yard a little more regularly.

I was always a responsible kid that generally stayed out of trouble. Each kid will be ready at a different age.

Daughter Eldest touched off a .45 flintlock loaded with 50 gr of FFF and a patched roundball, setting up on shooting sticks, at age 3. She giggled.

All my kids take 4-H Shooting sports at age 8, and get their own .22 single shot to shoot in a silhouette match.....

They take hunter safety whether they want to hunt or not, when they turn 11 or 12....... (just like they take swimming lessons whether they want to or not: deep water and guns are out there, and knoledge beats ignorance, because what you don't know can hurt you.)

I got started shooting when I was 6 with a 22lr. With my kids once they started to show an interest is when I took my son I think he was about 13. My daughter is now 22 and just wanting to start shooting. I plan on starting my grand-daughter out in three more years when she turns five.

Ther'es the reason the average age of hunter is so high, or part of it......

There's the cure, or part of it.

I dont have kids yet but I started out at 11, my older brother started when he was 13 and my little brother has been shooting since he was 7

My kids haven't started shooting at ages 2 and 5 but they both go and sit in the deer blind. We will start our five year old daughter with a single shot .22 for Christmas.

I bought my son his first bb gun the day he was born. The first time I carried him hunting I had a bag full of bottles and diapers. I guess by the time he was 5 or 6 he was shooting a 22 and 410 by himself(with supervision). He shot his first deer at 8. That spike buck is still on the wall even though he's killed a lot more and bigger deer since then. When he was in school I had to go down there more than once to explain to them that there's some things they don't teach and he wouldn't learn in a class. Now at almost 21 he'd rather hunt and fish than eat and sleep.

Depends on the child. My daughter shot my P22 pistol at 7. My 10/22 has an after-market stock so she couldn't shoot it correctly. I may pick-up another 10/22 and put a red-dot on it for her.

My dad gave me my first single shot 22lr when I was 7 and told me not to shoot any body or any ones property and turned me loose. For my 12th birthday he got me my first center fire rifle (marlin 357 magnum) the follow year I got my first deer with it.

I gave my oldest kid a BB gun for his 10th birthday. I have taken him shooting about once a month every month after his 8th birthday. I have a 10/22 that will be his when he turns 12 but he is only allowed to shoot it when I am around.
