Started a habit...

...a habit of buying a knife for my birthday over the last few years. Last year I picked up a Spyderco Spyderfly with VG10 blade. It's a pretty cool knife, and pretty unique as far a butterflies go. I carry it every once in a while, but with a blade over 4 inches and a 6 inch handle it's not what I'd call sheep friendly. ;) This year I picked up a CRKT Voodoo. It's an assist open that uses a torsion bar and cam combo. The blade is 154CM and was scary sharp out of the box. What I think is really cool is that it was designed by Pat Crawford and he just lives about 40 minutes down. Plus it's put together by the fine folks of Tennessee.

Here a link that has all the specs and such....

I know a lot of knife "enthusiast" would snob there nose and anything made by CRKT, but personally I've been attracted to a lot of their designs. I would have to say that the Voodoo is the best sample of CRKT that I've personally held. Mainly because of the quality of steel of steel that was used. The dog-bone design makes a real comfortable EDC. The only issue that I've had was after about three weeks of carry I noticed the blade had lost that rock-solid lock up that it had when I first got it. The cause of the newly developed play was that the pivot screw had backed out a little, but a little thread lock took care of that. I hope that maybe this will be the start of a new CRKT up shelf knife series.

BTW- I picked it up for $67 shipped on ebay.

Nice looking knife Flashpoint. I am looking for a good "spring assist" knife as "automatics" are illegal in Illinois. Any recomendations? (I would prefer a blade in the 3" range).

If I was looking for something besides the Voodoo or Wild Weasel I might look at these...
Benchmade - 670S Apparition (can't go wrong)

SOG - Flash or Blink (Heard good things)

Camillus - Sizzle ROBO

Buck - Tempest, Rush, or Sirus

Kershaw - Scallion, Leek, Baby Boa, and Mini Mojo (I think the Mojo and Boa are interesting knives)

I prefer 154CM/ATS32 steel and personally wouldn't look at any knives that didn't have 440A/AUS8 or better steel ( which take the Bucks out of the running). That's one thing I really like about the Voodoo, 154CM steel knives usually cost a C-Note or better. It all really depends on what your budget is. There are some perfectly good knives to be had for a $50 range if you'll look. Go to Ebay and do a search. That will give you an idea as of what out there and at what price.
