Star M-45

I like the Firestar series. I have the .40 and it's very accurate and reliable. I wish I owned a .45 ACP version.
Here at the far leftist's state of oregon, stuck on the coast, I like the Starvel finish too for it's resistance to the salt water climate.
Plus Star handguns are a micro lesson of what happens when leftists control the state and the people lose their God given right of self defense.

Every handgun maker in Spain is out of business.

The M45 Firestar is an outstanding little tank of a pistol and I trust that it will bring you as much shooting pleasure as mine has brought to me.

Not to be argumentative, but I don't believe that the demise of Star Firearms had anything to do with any 'leftist' issues.
Same fate for Astra and others.
More of an indirect influence of financial issues in the 'East'.
Regardless, it is a pity that they're no longer with us and not still producing firearms.

Actually, the Firestars and the similar late Stars are why Star is out of business. While these are good guns, there is nothing special about them and they are all heavy as a load of bricks.
If Star had simply kept doing what they did best (making 1911-style pistols) they would probably still be in business today. Their DK model is what the Colt, SIG, Kimber, etc. .380s are directly copied from. The BKM was the grand daddy of the SIG P938. When they decided to make "modern" guns they went out of business.

My M45 was a lot of fun. My only caveat: don't shoot Plus P or any other hot loads, you may damage it like I did mine. Regular.45 only

Note that none of the Firestars are as heavy as a comparable-sized 1911 ;)

Note how much those Firestars look like S&W 3rd Gens
and you have a few more answers...even moreso when
you find out that M45's share mags with the S&W 4500-series,
and the CS45 mags are a perfect match when you add
the Star magwell catch hole to them.

The Ultrastar line was truly next-generation, but came too late.
their Polymer pistol has a few features that even new pistols
don't do, but should have learned from. That ultralight slide is
a sneaky way to handle .40S&W recoil...makes it a non-issue.
Less mass moving backwards means less felt recoil.

And the Megastar Line...OMG :)
The Megastar 45 was capable of firing .45-super without even
bothering to change anything!! And the Megastar 10 was a beast.
But again, too little, too late...

Spain's economic woes killed Star, Astra, and a handful of others.
Their draconic anti-gun laws made the situation worse...
the US's 10-rd max in 1995 couresty of Bill Clinton, killed several
of their best sellers, including the Megastar line and the 30/31.
So by 1997, Star was toast...the workers of Star and Astra got
together and created ASTAR, which lasted about three years, but
there was no way they could succeed, with the anti-gun climate raging
full-bore and restrictive laws being passed in the US & EU.

The 1911's rise due to the Clinton Gun Ban is where RIA came in to
play...they've taken up the slack in 9mm 1911's where Star fell.
Adding more calibers and options...including their own .22TCM,
which is superior to the FN 5.7 in every way.

Now that mag capacity is no longer restricted, an inventive cuss
with muchbux could utilize the Smart tech that Star used, and
re-release the Firestar & Ultrastar lines to a much more receptive
audience, as single-stacks are now IN. The M243 Firestar Plus
was a great little doublestack along the lines of the S&W 5900-series,
which also used 5900-series mags...9mm & .40S&W options made it
the Perfect BUG, slipped easily into concealment, and was pretty light
for an all-metal pistol. The Ultrastar 9mm & .40 had some features
that would sell well now, if only anyone paid attention to 'em ;)

Everything Star made in it's last generation was either an improvement
on the 1911 in the lines of what S&W did with 3rd Gens, but since STAR
pistols had the controls in the Frame instead of the Slide, they could use
longer barrels than the S&W, and were MORE ACCURATE at the firing line.
A point to ponder, indeed!!

The Ultrastar's were basically Improved Glocks...but they were unable
to explore the double-stack mag before their demise...would have
been AMAZING as a double-stack instead of a single-stack!!
And the frames were truly next-generation!!

There's a Starvel M45 and an M40 in my safe. I bought both guns new in the early '90's. I remember that the Firestar was named "Handgun of the Year" in 1993, or thereabouts. Then, just a few years later, Star was history.

Of the 2, the .45 is my favorite. It is a bit heavy, but, I kind of like that. It helps to make it easy to control the .45 from such a small gun. The .45 is also crazy accurate for a gun with such a short barrel. It will easily stand with most of my 1911's. And, the trigger pull is decent. I run my 185JHP handloads through it, and it has never missed a beat.

I'd like to find a Starvel M43 9mm in excellent shape to round out my collection.

Pics of my Firestars...

You guys should compare the Firestars to the PD and BKM.

Other than looks and the heavy all-steel construction, the Firestars are just like the 1911-style Stars-except bulkier and much heavier.

I've eyed a few of the PDs, just never made the leap... yet!
The alloy frame paused me a bit, but I did pick up one of the Firestar Plus some years back so who am I kidding?

Technically you already have one.
Slap an M43 9mm barrel & recoil spring into your M40,
and that really is an M43, without the stamping.

Star did one really WILD thing with the M43/M40,
and they are the ONLY Gun Mfr to EVER get it right...
the 9mm and .40 mags are the same. Exactly the same.
You can put 9mm in the .40 marked mags,
and .40 in the 9mm marked mags...and they work PERFECTLY!
Every part except the barrel & recoil springs interchange on those.
Have heard it said that you don't even have to change the
M40 recoil spring if it's worn in enough...

Taken yet another step further, you can put your
M40 slide on top of an M243 Firestar Plus,
and that gives you an M240.

If I ever hit the lottery, I'll reverse-engineer the Number Model Stars
and make 'em in Florida with CNC equipment...with the appropriate
hand-fitting & QC so they work properly...with a totally 100%
Veteran Workforce.

And that includes the Ultrastar & Megastar lines along with the
Firestar & Firestar Plus and ALL will have 10mm as an additional
caliber option. Just 'cause I'm kinky like that ;)

I love my Firestar M43 - - but alas,,,,just like my ancient Targa (Erma/Excam/Tangfolio)GT380, which was a God-send when I picked it up back in the 70's & is more accurate than a cheap or expensive gun has a right to be......

Both are regulated to the safe - and seldom if ever invited out to the range anymore.

Reason?

Parts. They are more or less orphans with a dwindling supply of parts.
Matter of fact, I've searched for grips for the GT380 for years. Picked up a set a few months ago, off Ebay, and the screw holes were in the wrong place.
That's the third pair of grips & the last I'll try. I've now spent more on trying to find grips for that gun than the gun is worth.

Ok - sorry for the downer....

Enjoy your new M45.
They are really nice shooters & the triggers really break in well.

They are sort of a cross between a Commander & a S&W Shield - size of the Shield & weight of the Commander.
