Johnny guest mentioned the Star B at SOG...
how good are they ? I've been good ALL YEAR
(today's the 9th :-)))) and I think I need another
9MM. Opinions please.

I had one

many years ago and loved it. I sold it due to economic necessity and have regretted it since. If SOG still has some as of 02-01-2002, I will be getting one myself. It was very reliable, accurate and fun to shoot. I had no complaints.

I collect old guns (I have a Curio & Relics FFL) and bought one last year. Got a good one (from Empire Arms.)

While I collect, I also like to shoot what I collect. So had a trigger job done on mine. Mine was in very good shape with a very good barrel. It was a great looking gun.

As 9mms go, however, it was, at best SO-SO. (Just about any 9mm I've got would shoot RINGS around it.)

Because it is basically a very old gun, designed before WWII, the sights are small and not very good. And accuracy was only fair. Even with a trigger job, it was nothing to get excited about. I traded it to another collector for a Star Firestar Plus (I already had one) and think it was a MUCH better gun. The newer Super Bs might be a better gun; they do have some enhancements.

If you're looking for a solid 9mm, there are probably better guns. If you want something for a "plinker," look at the Makarovs that are available. (They shoot 9x18, which is a slightly less powerful round than 9mm, but stouter than .380. The ammo is readily available and not too expensive.)

If you want a more serious gun, check out the .45 acp Argentine Systemas (which are true Colt designs, built on Colt machinery, by Colt-trained machinists in the late 40's - 70's), or look into the somewhat similar Ballestar Molinas. Much better guns for not a lot more money.
