Stainless Ruger P90

As my deliberating on which handgun I want to buy goes on, I came across the Ruger KP90, priced $459.99 at Gander Mountain. The gun is solid, beefy, and built like a tank. It fit my hand well (YMMV), the controls were ambidextrious, and I liked the safety options (decock, or decocked and locked).

I hear the Rugers are strong and reliable. I have questions.

Will the gun be able to stand a steady diet of +P ammo? It was built for 10mm originally, wasn't it?

Can it fire .45 Super without damaging it?

The same store gave me a price quote for the CZ97B: $574.99. So, between the two, and their pros and cons, the Ruger is the winner. The Ruger has the ambi safety, costs less, has plenty of aftermarket parts and stuff for it, and isn't so huge (It's no bigger than a government model, and has 1/2" less barrel to boot).

Any reason I shouldn't buy the Ruger? The price seems in tune with what I'll be able to spend in June when I turn 21. (I've got college bills to pay yet).

They are ok guns. I wouldnt carry one myself, just to damn bulky. This is coming from someone who carries a Glock 22. I will say this, go to rugerforum.com and read a little bit. I will tell you this, the flying slidestop problem is real. I had this problem with my Ruger P97DC. Supposedly, Ruger will fix it if the gun has this problem.

I didnt give them a chance, sold it, and decided my life was worth a GLOCK.

BTW, 459? Thats pretty high. They are easy to find for 375, brand new here in Indy. If they are 459, then I imagine GLOCKs, in your area, are about 560-600. They are 499 here. If you just don't like GLOCKs, I'd go with a Sig, Beretta. Even the CZ, is better than the Ruger, IMO

Be safe

KP90

The KP90 is renowned for it's reliablity and ability to handle almost any kind of ammuntion.
It will handle +P ammo with ease.
From what I've read, the flying slidestop problem only affects the P97.
If you want a reliable, accurate, affordable and American-made handgun, the the KP90 will not disappoint.
You really can't lose with that gun, but I agree that the price seems a bit high.

Same as what USGuns said. One of the greatest DA/SA 45 autos out there. Extrememly accurate. Will handle everything from lite loaded SWC to a steady diet of +p ammo. Don't think it's to bulky, carries IWB just like a 1911. I chose mine over a Sig P220 and I am not sorry one bit. The price is about $80 over what they sell for around my part though.

Asking around, I can see that prices in my area (Upper Michigan) seem to be running higher than other places. *shrug* Can't be helped, I suppose.

460? Thats just insane. I just sold my P90TH for 350 with 3 mags and a holster. I'd say keep looking for a better price. You really can't go wrong with the P90 (or the P89 for that matter). It should handle as much +p ammo as you care to feed it without any problems. I think you need to replace the recoil spring for .45 super, but I'm not 100% sure.

YOu think $460 for a Ruger is bad? Try $599 for a Glock 21. $769 for a standard full sized Springfield. $579 for a Beretta 92.

I'll try some other places to see if their prices are lower, but there aren't many gun stores in town.

Nightcrawler,

With those prices, I would definitely look on line and purchase from out of state. There are some excellent prices on guns for sale on this site.

Also, check out:

www.gunsamerica.com
www.gunbroker.com

To find a dealer in your area to receive the guns check out
this site:

I've had good luck on Gunsamerica, as most deals on Gunbroker are too expensive.

Good luck in your quest for a first handgun.

Steve

Yes replace the recoil spring with +P or super. My new P90 is throwing the brass 9-10ft with range ammo. Its a nice gun for the price and isn't as heavy as the CZ97. That one isn't a carry gun IMO. The P90 is accurate and reliable and soft shooting and ugly! What more could you want? ;)

The P90 was my first .45acp. The Ruger is built like a tank and digested all ammo. It probably can't be destroyed. However, the P90 has trigger creep, the trigger transition from double action to single action was too spacious, the factory sights could be improved. Magazine capacity is lame at 7 rounds with the stock magazine and 8 rounds if you upgrade to the P97 magazine.

I own a P90 and find it to be one of the best guns I've ever shot. It's accurate, eats anything, and it's built like a tank. It also has very little recoil. I find it very manageable with one hand.

Get IT!!! It's an excellent gun.

I have a KP90, "built like a tank" is a good description. The stock sights are decent under MOST lighting conditions, and it goes BANG! every time I mash the trigger. I haven't tried any of the +P loads, but so far, it works with whatever I feed it. My 'defense" load for this is the Rem 230 Gr "Golden Sabre" JHP, range round is the Sellier & Bellot 230 Gr ball. $420 at my local gunshop.

I like my KP-90 .. great gun.

I think you can beat your price online ... saw one NIB for $395 a week ago from I guy I had done business with before. (on GunBroker.com Seller name: BigMax)

I bought mine "used" from him 6 months ago for $295. Could hardly even tell it had been fired!

Good luck.

Well, thing is, if I buy one one line for say $400, in order to get it here, I have to pay shipping and my dealer's $40 transfer fee. So, in the end, I'm almost where I started pricewise, and I do not link the idea of buying a gun before ever seeing it.

Besides, with Michigan's permit-to-purchase system, I'm not even sure if I can legally buy a handgun from out of state like that.
