Stainless Barrel Break in

I've read that you should fire one shot then clean for 10 rounds. Fire two shots and clean for 30 rounds. Then there are some that recommend JB bore cleaner. I heard that the usage of JB isn't recommended.

What do you guys recommend for breaking in a stainless barrel? I just got a Remington 700 BDL with a stainless barrel. Since it's a production barrel, do I even have to worry about breakin?

Dont know if youre using it as a tac driver or a general purpose rifle, but break in is not a bad idea. At worst it may make cleaning easier through the life of the barrel. you can check www.snipercountry.com fro break in tips. go to the cold shots-hot tips section.

ArmySon,

It isn't necessary for you to waste your time with a convoluted "break-in" process for any barrel. A friend of mine and I both have custom barreled Winchester M70s in .30-'06. He did just as you described for the first 100 rounds and I just cleaned mine when I was done shooting. After all that cleaning the only thing we found was that he had spent more time cleaning and less time shooting than I. In a fair test of the rifles accuracy (He fired both rifles because he's the better marksman.) there was no statistical difference in the accuracy of either rifle. He fired five rounds from both rifles, with two minutes between rounds, on two different days. The first test showed my rifle fired the smallest group, the second showed his rifle fired the smallest group. I think my barrel will last longer because I don't spend much time abusing it with JB bore paste and cleaning rods. I use Hoppe's #9 and CLP (Breakfree) to clean my firearms. I also use a Bore Snake(TM) while the barrel is still warm. I have found that the cleaning is easier this way.
