Stainless 1860 and others.

It's been raining hard yesterday and again today....all day. Impossible to do anything outside so I was going over my gunbroker "watch" list.

I have observed that stainless steel 1860's are kind of hard to come by.
The ones I have seen have been in the $900.00 range. Stainless is great, but to me it just isn't worth that price when I can get an 1860 in nickel for about $200.00 which is almost (but not quite) just as good regarding corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning. The stainless ones are superior in that they have steel frames and can take a stronger BP charge, whereas some (but not all) nickel plated ones are brass frame under the nickel plating.

One other advantage of stainless over nickel plating, is that if you need to do any filing on the stainless, you can buff it out afterwards and it's still stainless all the way through. Whereas with nickel plating, if you have to file anything you go through the nickel plating to the base metal (either steel or brass) underneath. So stainless is much easier to work with if you need to do any tweaking or filing to your revolver.

Anyway....I saw a Uberti stainless 1860 go on gunbroker today for $380.00 at this link.....

No doubt it was definitely worth it, but I refrained from bidding because I just recently got a stainless (like) 1851 Marshall and also a nickel with gold cylinder 1860 several weeks ago. I liked the stainless 1860 Uberti, but the main reason I didn't bid was because I'm holding out for that nickel and gold 1851 Pietta with the full length barrel. The one that has the star on the barrel and is similar to my '51 Marshal with its engraving, but is nickel/gold instead of stainless and has the full length barrel.

The one I really hated missing bidding on, on gunbroker was this stainless 1858 Remy that went for $150.00 recently at this link.....

My friend Pete has been looking for a stainless 1858 Remy and I really kick myself for missing out on bidding on that one for him.

Oh well....can't get all the good deals.

That stainless Uberti 1860 sold for $380 and not $280.
That one is sort of a rare bird.

Dammit, how did I miss that one?

It is a rare bird. I've only been able to identify 15 Stainless Steel Ubertis made in the 80s so far.

Good catch Arcticap, I meant to type $380.00 but accidentally typed $280.00 instead. Yep, that Uberti stainless 1860 did sell for $380.00 not $280.00

Fingers, now that I know you are looking for a stainless 1860, I'll keep an eye out for you for a good deal on one if I see it.

Bill, I'm looking for any of the Uberti Stainless Colt revolvers. They made 14 different varieties of them in the 80s. See my thread on SS Uberti's.

Looks like you have run out of 2nd gens to buy.

How do the factories make these Stainless runs? Are they centered around Holidays (Like Christmas) or is it more random?
I have seen them intermittedlly pop up on the used sites but they are usually Piettia Remingtons which are seemingly in "Always Production" sold through Cabelas catalog.
There is usually a Target Model plus a standard one, I think I even saw a 5 1/2" also.
Stainless steel has a lot going for it. Strength, ease of repair, and good looks!
Bill, you could watch Cabelas Bargin Barn for sales on new ones. If I remember correctlly they have one on sale now.

No, it's just that the ones I don't have are few and far between - and pricey. As a result, to satisfy my C&B acquisition syndrome symptoms, I've branched out into other more mundane - but equally rare - makes/models. The Gregorelli and Uberti models, SS Uberti models, Confederate models, other limited editions, etc. I mean, when was the last time you saw a nickel plated Walker with case and accessories??

Hello, Bill & Fingers. Years ago I came across a NIB Colt 1860 army at gun show..even then they were expensive...only one I ever saw. Darn it...I knew I shouldn't have started reading these posts..this stuff is contagious!! In your opinion..how would the stainless Uberti of today compare as far as fit & finish to the Colt re-make stainless of the 80"s? Have you ever came across a Colt 62' police 6 1/2" in stainless? Thanks guys!

Ideal,

The SS Uberti Colts were made at the same time as the 2nd Gen Colts in the 1980s. There are no currently made SS Colts. The ones I have (1860 Army & 1851 Navy Ubertis and Colts) are pretty much identical. I doubt you could tell them apart.

The only SS 1862 Pocket Police models I have identified/seen so far have 5 1/2 inch barrels.

Here's a cased set with a Uberti and 2nd Gen Colt. Can you tell which is which (no fair reading the frame markings)?

I wish I could help you here Ideal Tool, but I don't know the answers to your above two questions. I defer to Finger's expertise in this regard since he has researched stainless steel Uberti Colt clones as well as the stainless steel models actually made by Colt.
