Staining stainless steel?

I carry a S&W 638, with black rubber grips, in a pocket holster. The pistol grip area can be seen (just barely) when I wear certain pants and the pistol shifts; at that point, the strip of stainless steel between the grips can be a tad bit obvious. Most people wouldn't know what they were seeing but I don't need the hassle from those who might just know and ask about it.
I've used a black "Sharpie" as a temporary fix but it's just that: temporary. Anyone have suggestions for staining the stainless? I really don't want to change the grips if I don't have to.
Thanks!

Yes, stainless steel can be blued, and stained different colors. It is somewhat specialized, but not unlike bluing. Best to give the job to someone who knows how and does it all the time, IMO.

Take the grips off, mask it and spray paint the backstrap with black paint. Of course, you'll need to clean/degrease the area first. You can remove the paint with thinner, later.

Might try something durable like one of the spray on coatings made for guns, or a spray paint that is epoxy based. Won't rub off as quickly. Gotta do a real good degrease though for anything you put on.
