Stag grips

I'm looking for some stag grips for an N frame revolver. I know that both Ajax and Eagle carry these. Ajax is about $60 more. Are they worth it? Does anyone else carry these?

I don't know about any cheper but I do know that if you want them you'd best buy while you can. No more Smabar stag being imported from India at this time.

Do a search on gunbroker.com before you buy. There's a guy that posts a lot of stag there. I recently purchased two sets from him. Both were cheaper than Ajax and the quality was excellent.
It's my understanding that India now limits the shed antler harvest to two weeks per year. I don't see them changing that law, so unless a new source is identified, the supply will be limited for some time.

You might also want to check with Tyler (Tyler T-grip). A few months ago they had some stag odds and ends on clearance.

After several months of looking for the exact same thing I have a few observations;
First, the only grips I could find were standard panels. There does not seem to be any oversize or finger groove grips, in stag, comercially available.
Second, expect to pay between $125.00 and $210.00+ for them. The drying up of the stag supply has driven the cost of this excellent grip material sky high.
Third, it pays to purchase from a supplier thaty can send you a pic of the actual grips you will be getting. As you know real stag varies from a smooth bone-like appearence to a total bark-like surface. The nicest looking grips have some bark in the center and are smooth bone-like around the edges.
I have a set for my Mountain Gun on the way from www.longhornguns.com. They were the only place that would send me a pic of the grips before I purchased.

The set of stag grips for my N frame .45 Colt S&W Mountain gun came in today. I bought them from longhornguns.com but when I took them out of the box I noticed they had the familar Eagle Grips stamp on the inner surface. These are the grips you see on my last post in the the lower corner.
After I installed them I noticed a few high spots so I took the fine sandpaper and steel wool and set about making a SLOW but perfect fit. The grips feel much like the original factory grips found on round butt revolvers. The contour is more or less an oval. It also eminds me of the original factory grips found on the old Speed Six or Service Six. I think the grips of these old Rugers fit my hand better than anything ese I have picked up.
I popped off a few rounds after my fitting job. As long as the rounds were within the standard .45 Colt power level the revolver shot like a dream. I think I will like these grips for general carry and light trail use. When I went to a few high power rounds the gun bucked like a bronco. With focus I found that could hang on and shoot pretty darn well even double action. But I also remembered why the rubber Pachmyer and Houge grips were invented. My palm is still tingling as I type.

All in all this is now one classy looking revolver. It has the type of look you would expect on the hip of an explorer or some Indiana Jones type. With my .45 Colt Blackhawk to shoot the really romper stomper bear rounds if I need them I think the Mountain Gun loaded with .45 pumpkum roller loads will handle about anything else I might run into and look dern good doing it.

I just downloaded a thirty day trial of Adobe Photoshop, so thought I'd better use it. I bought these in order from left to right. What's next you reckin?

I had a set of "stag grip's" on an old Colt U.S. Army model
1917, and it dressed it up real nice; even with its gold
plated hammer, trigger, and ejector rod. :) :D

I had about 5 minutes to snap a few photos of the new stag grips before I was hijacked to go out and eat. Not the best photos I have ever done but you get the idea. I will spend some time tomorrow taking new pics of a similar layout with my Case XX Damascus blade stag handle knife..

I did not notice the flare on this one until I started processing it.

Fitz Imitation Stag Grips $32

I have really tough Imatation Stag grips of Duramite a Nylon-Plastic blend in standard and oversize ones that fill in behind the trigger and extend below the frame.

They are tough for SASS Cowboy shooters but not tough enough to pound nails in wanted posters (SMILE)

I will try to get some pics soon Paul
