SR9E

My nieces boyfriend bought one Friday for $349 + tax and then came over to play on my range and let me shoot it and walk him through operations and breakdown and cleaning of it. Plain and simple ,I like it.no frills or extra bells and whistles, does have an ambi safety, and a decent trigger (not great ,not bad) good visible 3-dot white sites, with an option to change back straps(no extras with the gun must be bought separately). Took me about 10 shots to get a feel for it and get my grip and trigger reach figured out then I started putting them on target at 10 yards, breakdown and cleaning is easy and straight forward, had to read a little because i had never brokedown a ruger but real simple. I think it's going to be a damn good pistol for him and from the few rounds i put through it and just first impressions I would say it's well worth a sub $400 investment.

I went to my LGS where the nieces boyfriend bought his pistol yesterday, they had another in stock and a normal SR9, held both in my hands and compared them to one another. for my money the SR9E is a better pistol and here is why, no stupid loaded chamber thing, the slide is cut for normal dovetail sights so aftermarket sight will be easy to find (the SR9 has a Ruger specific cut for the adjustable sights), the cocking searations are fewer and wider apart on the 9E letting my thumb get a deeper grip on the slide, the 2 guns I was looking at the SR9 was 2-tone while the 9E was solid black( my preference ) and at $349 it was $85 cheaper than the SR9. the only minus I give the 9E is that it comes with only one mag

I enjoy the SR9 design quite a bit but I despise magazine safeties and I refuse to remove safety devices aftermarket due to legal concerns. This pistol is very much up my alley, as I understand they removed the mag safety.

Is the black finish the same nitriding on the black SR9, or something cheaper?

Edit: I spoke too soon, looks like it does have the mag safety after all. Bummer.

I believe the SR9E has a cheaper finish. Black oxide rather than nitride I believe. Also, if anyone is looking at buying one and willing to buy online check gunbroker before paying that much for an SR9E. I watched a new regular SR9 sell for much cheaper than $349.99 a few days ago. $291 plus shipping to be precise.

As mentioned, the 9E finish is black oxide versus the much-superior nitride or stainless finish of the SR9.

SR9s are almost always retail at $400-420 around here, and include one more mag ($30), so the price difference is really only about $20-$40.

All that said, I really like the 9E. It looks like one of the best "budget" pistols out there (along with the SIG SP2022).

I've not heard anything authoritative about the magazine disconnect, whether it's there on the sr9e or not. I see a lot of people assuming it's gone, because Ruger doesn't mention it.

Perhaps the original poster could tell us, having had some hands on with that gun.

$32.49 each, for full 17 round capacity magazines, at Midway. And of course, you'll want at least 3.

the trigger works without the mag because I function tested it like a glock after i put it back together. but when you first put it back together you must insert the mag to reset the ejector before the trigger will work and fire the gun, thought i had put it together wrong at first, finally read the manual to see what i was doing wrong
Edit; i read it has a mag safety, but like I said the trigger function test and resets without the mag in it  i did not try firing it without the mag though. and also read about the reversable back strap just now too ,I was going by what I saw while playing with it an what was in the box did not mean to spread misinformation :)

No. The backstrap is reversible. Take it out and flip it over to go from an arched to a flat backstrap.

Ruger sells a replacement backstrap, but it is the exact same one that comes with the pistol.

lee, you're right, I have to apologize. I had read in a few places that it was going to be sans magazine safety, but a little further research suggests that is not the case. I'll edit my post.

all in all I think that Ruger did a great thing in releasing the SR9 in an E model. I would prefer an SR45 compact to play around with but an E is a good second direction to take the SR line.

however with all of the features and corners that were cut in producing the 9E, I would not pay $350 for it. I bought my SR9 compact for $400 out the door, $50 off for a gun with a single magazine(costs $30) and much less durable finish just is not a good deal for me. in the $300 range it is much more desirable.

It's brand new. Let's see where it ends up, price wise.

My understanding is the SR series' magazine safety is a striker block. The trigger will still work, but the striker is blocked from moving far enough forward to hit a primer.

I wonder if this is Rugers answer to the S&W SD VE. Right around the same price point.
Essentially yes, although I don't know if "answer" is necessarily the right term.

The SR9E is more like a de facto replacement for the recently-discontinued P95PR, which was significantly less expensive than the standard SR9, and about the same price as an SD VE.

very true and I'm certain that the price will drop, they often do with new products. I'm just saying as it stands, the price difference currently is just not large enough to warrant me laying down the cash for one yet.
I wonder if this is Rugers answer to the S&W SD VE. Right around the same price point. Except the Smith comes with 2 mags.
I'm going to go ahead and say no, I think it is more of a response to the hate mail sent after they did away with the P series pistols which were all $300-ish price range. Ruger P series were always a decent, budget priced pistol line and I think that this is where they would like the SR series to also end up, at least in limited fashion.

as long as they kept the ruger trigger, I think that the 9E is leaps and bounds ahead of the SDVE aside from only shipping with one mag.

I'm still hoping that someone will enlighten me re: the "normal dovetail sights" on the SR9E as opposed to the "Ruger specific cut" on the standard SR. "Normal" is....?

ruger uses a larger than normal dovetail for their sights, almost everyone else uses one of a couple different sizes which are easy to get sights for, with the standard SR line, you have to get sights specific to the SR series. the E apparently uses one of the standard sizes.

I went to my local gun store and was excited to see that they had one in stock...until I looked at the price. They wanted $425 for it!! Wish they had a better price as I would have grabbed it. Damn store is all over the place in their pricing.. Some guns they give away and some they ask full retail. Too bad as they have a great selection.

I need a high capacity 9mm and the SR9e seems to be about perfect for my purposes. I will be getting one in a couple of weeks.
