Squirrel Hunting from your deer stand.

Just saw something similar on another thread and thought of my end of deer season squirrel hunt. We use elevated stands and most are 2 person. We can bait in N.C. and we use corn out of feeders to keep the deer coming in. There have been many times that i've verified 10+ squirrels at the feeder and another 5 or 6 in the trees. We have some really nice fat squirrels.

So i have to figure out my squirrel hunting plans for the deer seasons end. I've come up with 2 options.

One would be to have my nephew join me and we wait till they've all gathered in their spot. 2 shots apiece with pump 12's should roll most of them. A couple more could be picked off when they were making their escape.

My 2nd scenario sounds more fun. .22 cal spring powered recoiless air rifle with a 36x AO scope. Head shots only and i'm think in i get in the creek and shoot level at them as i can duck down to recock. Not sure if the noise will be an issue at 35 yards but i don't think they will see me.

What's your plans? J.R.
 
my plans would be the cheap old savage 22lr semi/auto w/cheap bush. scope, just something about that gun. I may have $75 in it total, but i have killed more rabbits, squriels, birds, woodchucks, and even a few deer :) with that gun than probley all of my other guns put together.
 
does'nt sound like a bad idea, i would use the shotgun myself. i've had a few times when i had squirrels running around me in my stand. almost shot one with my bow,it would'nt shut up. but once gun season started, would not see a one out there.

i'm not supposed to carry mixed ammo here.

meaning if i'm hunting deer,i can't have any ammo not approved for deer (buckshot,slugs sabots.). but if i'm small game hunting ( no larger than #4 fine shot),i can't carry any deer ammo with me. its a bit screwy.
 
Shotgun would be most effective for sure. In my northern hunts i've wanted to cap the little red squirrels that will get 10 feet away from me and cuss me for all their worth. Talk about irritating.

The model 54 by rws has a sliding action that lets the shooter feel no recoil at all. Its a true magnum so far as airguns go, 900 feet a second, .22 with lighter ammo.
It is match accurate and advertised as being so. Beats the crap outta your scope though. Honestly, the only scope thats taken the beating so far is a Bushnell. I've been through other similar name brands and they just go to pieces. BSA's airgun scope litarally lost its eyeglass at the sight of it. 10.5 lbs but what a shooter...J.R.
 
thats the cool thing about squirrels, if they dnt get hit gun they usually dnt care about being shot at and will come back for the food in a few short minutes
 
I think your right, the airgun is the way to go. If i only get 2 or 3 i'll come back the next evening with my nephew and shotguns. I think we would bag at least 6 or 7 with the first shots. On my hunt this morning(not a deer in sight) i watched 8 messing around the cornpile. In the evening there is more for some reason.

For Christmas i bought my nephew(10) his first pump airgun, an inexpensive daisy. He'd been shooting a .410 for the last couple years but only had a cheap red ryder type airgun. With an inexpensive leapers scope mounted on it the daisy 88o would probably drop a squirrel but would be loud to shoot and pump. In comparison with my spring gun anyways. I think i''l do the first hunt solo and include him on the 2nd. I'll post the results:)
 
Somehow I think that any squirrel hunting activity at all would scare the deer. Would you notice if somebody killed your watchdog in your living room with an air rifle?:p
 
Just shoot 'em with 00 buck or .30-30 from deer stand... Right before dark. Maybe the deer will un-nocturnalize them self:o

If legal, I would still go big! Love to see the red mist! 12 Ga. Slug would also be pretty fun too!

LOL, yeah i guess a rem coppersolid would do the trick, Wouldn't have worry bout skinnin either..

I'm hoping to remove 30 or 40 of the little rascals over the next couple weeks. "Big squirrel with antlers" season is over on the 1st.and then the tree rats will pay for the hundreds of lbs of corn they've eaten. We simply have too many of them and i've been year round feeding for a couple years. They have multiplied like...{you pick what}

Gonna be a New Year squirrel reduction program..J.R.
