Squirrel Dogs

I have been thinking about squirrel dogs every since I saw a guy on TV hunting with them a few years ago. Does anybody know how to train a squirrel dog? Also, are there any websites that might be of asssistance. I have two sons that will be hunting age soon and this seems like a good way to break them into hunting.

That's an interesting question. One of my grandfathers trained his english setter and his springer spaniel to hunt squirrels in the woods and quail in the fields but usually people have smaller dogs trained just for squirrel. Also a lot of people I've seen preferred the females to the males. I'm interested as well but have no way of getting one any time soon. Here are a few URLs I found:

Around here folks are fond of Norwegian Elkhounds as squirrel dogs. I had one as a kid and they'll self train. They see a squirrel, chase it up a tree and bark until someone comes along and shoots it for them

"Feist" or "fice" dogs have been common as squirrel dogs, particularly in the South. They're sort of mongrel mostly-terrier types, and seem to take to the work.

You take a hunting-type dog out into squirrel country and they'll figure it out pretty quick...
