Springfield XD MOD.2 9mm, 4" or 5"??

Hi,

I am trying to decide between the Springfield XD MOD.2 9mm, in either the 4" Service Model or the 5" Tactical? The gun would be used strictly for range fun (and home defense). Which one would be more fun to shot at range with the softer recoil? I am in NJ, so I will NEVER be able to cancel carry, so that's not even a thought or option.

I'm thinking the answer will be the 5" Tactical, but I am not quite sure. I HAVE handled the 4" Service model but was not able to handle the 5" Tactical.

I would appreciate some thoughts for current Springfield XD MOD.2 owners!

Thanks
Mike NJ

Hopefully you'll be able to handle the 5" model some time too. You might find you have a real preference for the 4" model.

That said, my choice would be the 5" model for all the reasons you mentioned. The 5" will have less muzzle flip, it will be heavier so the felt recoil will be less and the sight radius is greater which should make it easier to shoot accurately.

Since it's just for range use, I'd get the Mod.2 Tactical. I haven't shot it, but I've shot the 3" and 4" Mod.2's, as well as the long 5.25" XD(M) so I figure I know what to expect. Plus you can get the 5" for just a hair over the price of any other length.

Perhaps one day, the People's Republic of New Jersey will discover an extra amendment in the Constitution and decide to allow you to carry the subcompact :roll eyes:

"Guys, do you see this? It's like it's been there the whole time, or something'..."

Here's another consideration, that's not at all what you asked for :p

Walther makes a 5" PPQ M2, and they're running $100 rebates on them. Said and done, the Mod2 is still a better overall value--you could probably get it for $500, whereas the Walther may be $50-$100 more after the rebate.

BUT--go try out a PPQ M2 and then see what you think about ergonomics and trigger. Walther has it all over Springfield (and everyone else) on those factors, in my opinion. I'm kind of a Walther convert these days, thought I still love my XD.

You'd have to put $150 into the Springfield to get an aftermarket trigger that would be as crisp as Walther's stock trigger. Of course Springfield gives you that fiber optic front, and Walther's stock sights kinda suck...

Still, worth a try in my opinion. Were it me, I'd go with the 5" Walther and pick up a better front sight for it.

In any event, go with the 5" version of whichever gun you buy for range use. Less recoil, less muzzle rise, longer radius, etc. You'll be more accurate with it.
