I just ordered the Springfield TRP in the Armory Kote Finish from the Custom Shop with a couple of modifications.
First, I'm having a Nowlin Match Barrel fitted to the standard TRP (like the Professional Model) to hopefully improve the intrinsic accuracy of the weapon.
Second, I'm having the full length guide rod and 16-lb recoil spring replaced with a standard guide rod configuration and a 17-lb Wolff Spring (like the Professional Model).
After looking over the specs on both the standard TRP and the Professional Model, it seems that much of the extra cost on the Pro-model comes from fitting many parts which seem to do very well without being overly "fitted."
So, for about an extra $300 and a 16-20 week waiting period, I should have an interesting toy for the range and for carry.
Any comments on these modifications and any suggestions are welcome. I'm also wondering if owners of the TRP believe it is a good weapon for using as a base upon which to build?
The mods sound cool. I have an early TRP that was built in 98 before the mag well, night sights, and ambi safety. It also has the two piece barrel which if i do my part will shoot 1 1/2 inches at 25 yards all day.
As Kermit said why start with such an expensive gun to modify? Most of the mods are already done with the exception of a good trigger job.
Any hoo enjoy your new blaster. I like my old TRP.
How dare you! Do you know how much that "CRG" serial # prefix cost me?
(Actually, not too much; thank gawd for the used gun market... )
Most recent SA's I've played with are shootin' machines, anyway; I'll bet that Nowlin tube gives you 99% of a Professional at a fraction of the MSRP. Have fun and let us know how she shoots!
I agree with all of your that the TRP is an expensive base, but I realized that all of the accoutrements I might add to a base gun were already on the TRP.
I also realized that the Standard TRP might be improved simply by having a high-grade match barrel fitted by people who know how.
I would have loved to have gotten the Professional Model, but I am a police officer and funds are eternally limited. Also, telling my lovely wife that I just spent $2k plus on a gun would have meant that I would have had to have sold it to afford a competent divorce attorney!!
Anyway, I thank you for the posts again!
P.S. By the way Tamara, about what did you spend on your Pro Model, if I might ask? Whatever it was, I'm sure you're having fun! Also, you've got a way cool website!!!
A pretty good deal for a Professional that'd had only 50 rounds put through it, considering the price when new. A guy traded it in on, IIRC, a new P.12-45 Limited and a used Kimber Pro Carry. Given that I don't see chances like that often, I jumped on it fast (before I had time to talk myself out of it). My boss was only too happy to make a fast nickel rather than wait on a slow dime.
I took a loade Springfield that shot great and sent it to the Custom Shop for a TRP upgrade. NOT GOOD !! The gun won't feed and the front night sight did not work Go figure. I believe that the quality control at Springfield needs tightening up. If I had to do it again I would buy a MILSPEC and have it done by someone. Just my opinion
Tamara! $1200-$1400 for the TRP Pro! That's amazing! I guess being in the gun biz has its advantages!
By the way. . . cool website once again! You're exactly right about Civilization II and Diablo. I have missed many nights of sleep conquering the world (usually when I'm working night shift at the department, though. Those nights off make it hard to pass the time.)
Anyway, I appreciate everyone sharing and will give you a report of how it shoots. This will be my second Springfield. My first was a Trophy Match Longslide with Wilson Ambi Thumb Safety and a Black-T finish (Walter Birdsong lives about three hours away, so I just dropped by his factory and let him work his magic). Shot great and I sold it to my dad. Long term, I'll probably get it back in an inheritance of some kind, but I hope that's a long way off.
Anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day and thanks again for your posts!
