Springfield SAR-8 Question

Hi,
I have a SAR-8 HK91 clone and after 40 rounds the bolt freezes in place and you have to manually pull the charging handle to eject the round and chamber the new round, it is a single shot now. But, if you disassemble the rifle and clean it, it shoots like a champ for another 30-40 rounds and the bolt freezes in place again, the gun goes bang, but the bolt does not move at all. Can you guys give me any insight into what might be going on? I talked to springfield and they said try diffrent ammo, I have been using Hirtenberger .308, so i know the ammo is great.

Thank You,

Sir-

Mine is the stamped receiver type, but the only time I had the rifle fail to cycle was when using Cavim ammo that has lacquered cases. The lacquer melts and the bolt fails to completely extract the case. While that sounds similar to your problem, the cause is likely different-the Hirt is good ammo.

Some of the clones have had extraction problems due to chamber problems in brand new barrels. A chamber reaming will sometimes fix that.

Other things to check is the inside of the receiver for sticky spots and paint bumps.

Another possibility is the something in the trigger system causing the hammer to resist the bolt, but that's a little unlikely.

Could be a problem with roller locking geometry too. Look into checking bolt gap.

The HK91.com website has a Clone and Gunsmith forums to consult with.

Nice picture. A smile would decrease the menace, though.

You might also check the gap between the bolt head and bolt carrier, with the bolt in battery (on a empty chamber) and hammer down. Using a feeler gauge, the gap should measure between .005" and .020".

cavim

Hi,

I appreciate the feedback:) I want to know what the headstamp on the Cavim ammo is? I shot some of this stuff that a friend of mine gave me, I also shot the Hirt. Please post a picture of the cavim and i will see if it is the same stuff. The stamp on the ammo is LC 65 and a cross in a circle.

Thank You,

erfan,

The head stamp LC 65 with a circle and a cross means the following:

LC = Lake City - for the Lake City armory where it was manufactured
65 = 1965 year of manufacture

Circle with a cross inside of it is the symbol for NATO ammo.

HTH,

EQP,

That helps alot, I kind of knew that it would be lake city, but i did not know that lake city manufactered .308, Well, is the Lake city good stuff? or Junk that gums up the fluted chamber?

Thanks

Erfan

erfan,

Everything that I have heard about Lake City is that it is top notch brass and good quality ammo. I don't think that it played a factor in the stoppages that you have encountered. Just to humor the folks at Springfield, ask them what type of ammo they recommend and run a box or two of that through the rifle. If you still have the problem you can go back to them and tell them it's not the ammo. Then maybe you can get them to take a serious look at it.

Best of luck,

CAVIM ammunition is stamped CAVIM with two numbers - I guess the year (my CAVIM ammo says CAVIM 88). The primer also has this green cast to it, sealant or laquer?

Definately stay away from CAVIM. It gummed up my HK91 good :(

I called springfield and they said to use Radway Green or Cavim. I know not to use Cavim ammo, I sent it in a year ago for the same problem and they sent it back and i just recently after all that time shot the rifle Monday and it did the same thing, the work order from Springfield said that they polished the Chamber and replaced the bolt, They also said to not get oil in the chamber.

As most places that sell Cavim say "Not for G3", I think Springfield is all screwed up. These rifles are relatively un-ammo sensitive, and the ones you've tried are excellent. Send it back again.

So you guys think i should send it back again? I would rather not have to do that, it takes a about 2 months to get it back and i am not sure if that will solve the problem? I am not sure if it is me or the rifle?

Thanks

Sar8

Hello,
I have a SAR8 like yours , i bought it NIB it has around 125 rounds fired through it , i used handloads 168 & 155 match bullets
as well as some 165 remingtons softpoint and some mil surplus fron Southern Ammo Supply . this rife shot them all , it had a couple of FTE but after about 50 rounds fired it has been perfect ,
shoots alittle over a inch with match & around 2 inches with the surplus . try some different ammo before you send it back .
thats all i can tell you sorry i cant be more help to you .

Grandpa,

I appreciate your feedback, All of your guys posts are extremely helpful in my time of need;)

Thank You

I think you may have heard S.A. wrong; maybe they said NOT to use CAVIM or RG.

I haven't heard of any problems with the RG in G3 type rifles, but I have noticed that it is considerably dirtier than other 7.62NATO like Hirtenberger and Portugese FNM.

Grandpa,

She is a beauty! Where did you get the bipod? Where did you get the sling? How do you clean the Chamber, please tell me step by step what you use and how you do it.

Thank You,

Hello,

Erfan

On the sling its one that Walmart sell around 14.00
on the bipod its a Harris , i took off the hand guard and drilled
through the rivit took a 8/32 nut and grounded it down alittle
to gain alittle more threads on the swivel , i had to cut the swivel down to about 5/16 inch of threads its a tight fit but the handguard will fit back on so you can run the pin back through the handguard . its sturdy and has no wobble in it . i have shot with the bipod and there dont seem to be any difference in shooting groups with it on or off . i used a Armilite scope mount for a flattop AR , its very sturdy and retains you moa when you take it off and put it back on . on the top of the receiver i had to cut about a 1/8 inch out of the rail to open it up for the Armilite mount to fit in . the scope is a Pro 50 Simmons 2x10x50 and i use Cetme mags bought 20 for 99.00 from Tapco . here's alittle better pic of the rifle , on the chamber i use brushes for a 20ga shotgun to clean it with brass and fiber .
if you have any questions drop me a email
