Springfield question

I have a Springfield V12.Over the weekend I notice that I could pull the trigger and drop the hammer in the half cock position. Is this a problem? When I pull the trigger in the half cock position then fully cock the gun I can see the trigger and the grip safety "pop out".Strange?Or should I not worry.

So long as your pistol has a Series 80 style hammer this is normal. It shouldn't have a negative impact on the safety of the pistol in any case. Double check your sear by first removing the magazine and clearing the chamber, then lock the slide to the rear. Now set the pistol on a hard surface (i.e. table, counter, etc.) on it's right side. Without holding onto the pistol, bump the slide release lever to disengage it from the slide so that the slide goes into battery. The hammer should not fall. If it does, take the pistol to a competent gunsmith and have the sear replaced before returning it to service or carrying it loaded again. If you are still unsure of the pistol, take it to a competent gunsmith and have it looked over.

Quote from the Springfield Armory Pistol Operation Manual which you should have read! "In newer models a half-cock ledge replaces the half-cock notch. This is not a safety device, nor can the thumb safety be engaged while in the half-cock position. When half-cock is engaged the hammer will fall forward safely from the ledge when the trigger is pulled. In earlier model, when the half-cock is engaged, the hammer will not fall when the trigger is pulled." Both of my SAs do the same thing and it is completely normal. SAs are 70 series pistols. Please read your owner's manual before operating any gun.

Frontsight, thank you for scolding me.I read that in my manual yesterday. But it does seem like it easier to drop the hammer in half cock.

That's what I and the manual said. The hammer is designed to drop when on half cock and the trigger is pulled. Normally I am not so abrasive, however, Springfield seems to get a lot of trashing from folks for no good reason. I have two of their guns and have dealt with their Customer Service and custom shop several times, and they've always been the most pleasant folks I've ran into. After a bad experience with Kimber, it's a breath of fresh air. I really hate it when someone doesn't understand the gun and gives the "anti-Springfielders" more reason to bash. That's all.
