Springfield Omega 10mm Pistol

Found one the other day in a gunshop, 95%+ condition.

Anyone have first hand experience with these things?first hand

the Omega was the second pistol I ever bought, a 6" ported model, this was about 12 years ago or so, as i recall the ejected cases had a nasty habit of thunking me in the forhead and the double extractors made it difficult for the smith to adjust this, it jammed pretty often with lead bullets, but was so-so reliable with jacketed, i was quite a newbie so i wouldn't want to comment on accuracy as any deficiencies were probably mine

Have one and it has worked very well for me. No failures of any kind. I have only shot jacketed through it and mostly Blaser of all things. I have had empties hit me on the forehead on occasion but it only happens to me 10-12% of the time.

(Early on in TFL I had mistakenly said that Peters Stahl, the German manufacturer of the slide assembly went with a hex bolt adjustment for the extractor. PS actually still uses the double extractor and the bolt modification must hae happened early on instead of later. This is evident from thier ad in the German Visier magazine I picked up while in Germany.)

The reason for the dual extractor system is to accommodate the 11 interchagable calibers for the gun. These are .45ACP, .38-.45ACP, 9mm, 10mm, .40SW, .38SA(?),9X24KC(?), 9X22MJR, 7.65P, 7.63M(?), .357SIG. The case head dimensions are close enough that if they use the pring loaded double extractors, they can self adjust to any of those calibers without any modifications. Just a simple barrel/recoil spring/magazine swap is all that is needed. Linkless lockup. Some (early?) models also had a treaded cap that retained the recoil spring. Removed with a hex wrench, IIRC. Mine isn't one of these.

Peters Stahl still makes them in a variety of capacity, finish, add-ons, lengths, etc.

Paid $700-$750 about ten years ago slightly used (the ubiquitous '200 rounds' quoted) but looked brand new. 6" ported on a Springfield frame. (Peters Stahl supplied the slide assembly, Springfield fitted them onto their frames.) Supposedly, there is someone in the US importing them as listed in one of the Gun Digest type books. IIRC, it is suppose to be Phillips and Rogers but it isn't listed on their website. Don't know who is making the frames for the Omega nowadays. After Springfield dropped the line, I think McMillan (before the merger) picked it up for a short time as the Wolverine before being dropped also.

Thank you both for really informative posts. Based on what you guys posted, I bought the pistol $425.00 and tax.

Took it to the range with full power loads yesterday.

All I can say is "Oh My GAWD!"

This is one incredible handgun.

I think I got a good deal, but my shooting partner has to one up me.......new in box STI 45 with 6 14 round hicaps.......$700.00 unfired. Somedays are just like that ya know.:D

Your shooting partner has definitely out done you, I recommend you sell you stahl to me ASAP, I'll give you $500. Is yours the 5" or 6"? BTW, the only guy in the US how really knows how to work on the action in these guns is in eastern washington, he's ex-Air Force CATM, and work for stahl while stationed in Germany.

In reply to your post.
I just purchased an Omega in 10mm myself. It is the 5 inch version with porting.
I shot the gun last week and it shot great 1 to 1.5 inch groups.
I shot 200 rounds through the gun and it never jammed nor did the cases hit me. In fact the cases landed 10 to 15 feet from me.
