Springfield Mil-Spec

Is the Springfield basic Mil-Spec 1911A1 strong enough for a steady diet of .45 +P (ala Cor-Bon) loads?

And, also, where the heck can I get a ambi saftey to put on it? If I order one from Springfield and tell them I want an ambi saftey, will they put one on it? Do I have to pay some outrageous "custom shop" fees just to have a saftey that I, as a lefty, can use?

Yes, it's plenty strong.

As for the ambi safety, I would think that your best bet is to get the pistol elsewhere ($460 is not unusual) and then have a smith do the work.

I would recommend a heavy duty firing pin spring and a 20 pound recoil spring. A shock buffer on the guide rod would also be a good idea.

The gun will handle it right out of the box, but the upgrades than stans mentioned would be great. And they shouldn't cost too much either.
