Springfield M1

What do you guys think of the Springfield M1 (made recently), I know they are no different than the ones used in WW2 but overall how are they, are they accurate and about how much do they cost. I am more of a handgun person but I have been looking into rifles and this would seem to be an ok choice for a .308.

I think you must be referring the the M1A, the M14 semi-auto clone. If so, it's a fine rifle, but pretty pricy.

I agree. They are nice, but I think a tad too expensive. I love mine and would never consider selling it. But if I had it to do over again, I am not sure I would. My advice for what its worth: save your money and get a nice Garand. If for no other reason, 3006 ammo is generally easier to get than 308. But if you reload or do much mail ordering ammo availability in 308 is not a problem. Enjoy whatever you choose!

If you not in a hurry, watch the auctions like http://www.gunbroker.com I know a buddy that won one for $1000 NIB standard grade. He changed his mind and I am buying it for $1400 with 2 stocks, 4x16x40 scope, mount and 5 extra 20 round mags, cleaning kit and two slings for $1400.
I don knoiw that if you search for M1 Or M1a there you will find one Garand in 90% condition and it has been reworked foe I think $800. There is also a Douglas Match barrel for $200 and on the next is a complete kit to built an M1A excluding barrel for I think it was $450 and that would be a nice rifle.

Hi, guys,

I would avoid the current crop of M1 rifles with "new made" receivers. They are put together from sometimes well worn GI parts and receivers that have had some quality control problems. If you are in the U.S. and want an M1 rifle, check out http://www.odcmp.com. There are also many rifles with GI receivers for sale at prices ranging from reasonable to ridiculous.

If you want a semi-auto M14 lookalike, try Springfield Armory, Inc., a commercial company not associated with the now-closed U.S. Springfield Armory. Their rifles are pretty good.
