Springfield Loaded 1911A1 Difficulties

Just recently purchased my first 1911A1, and overall I'm pleased with the pistols' performance. As of this posting, I've shot ~500 rounds through this pistol. The first problem I encountered was the rear site sloshing around in the dovetail, this was easily corrected with a little lock-tite. Currently, the only complaint I have against this piece is its propensity to malfunction every 100 rounds or so. The malfunctions are always the same; a round will become stuck half-way within the chamber, leaving the slide half open. Pulling the slide back and allowing the round to fall clear corrects this. The pistol has never jammed ejecting spent cartriges. Would a stiffer recoil spring possibly correct this? The only ammo I've used so far is CCI Blazer 230gr TMJ.

Have the same pistol had the same prob with the rear site and did the same thing loctite.
As for jamming I have shot about 600 rounds and not a prob. I guess you could try a spring they are pretty cheap!!

Good Luck :)

Hi, Seagull,

I am not sure of the problem. You seem to be saying that a round being loaded from the magazine does not go fully into the chamber. If that is true, is the round at an angle or straight with the chamber when it stops?

First, check the ammo for bullet shape, or something like improperly sized reloads. Try another brand of ammo.

Then try checking the chamber for sharp edges, and the feed ramp and face of the slide for smoothness. Also, check the extractor to see if the bottom has a sharp edge that can be keeping the rim from coming all the way up. And, of course, try other magazines to be sure the feed lips are not at fault.

Thanks for the prompt replys. To answer your questions Jim, the round is always parallel with the chamber. I've used both the factory 7 round mags and an aftermarket Shooting Star 8 round mag. The problem has occured with all of them. The ammo all seemed uniform and was never chambered and extracted prior to firing.

Is the extractor going fully over the rim of the round? I have had the same problem with the extractor not properly riding over the rim on the last round. Hangs up on the rim. Radiused the lower edge of the extractor and so far (cross your fingers) this has helped. Even slamming the slide didn't work.

What you have is a classic class 3, failure to feed or maybe a class 4, failure to lock into battery depending on where it's really hanging up at. Forget about messing with your pistol any until you change ammo. Blazer and the most recent crop of PMC are among the dirtiest of stuff around, and not conducive to proper break-in of anything.
I also just bought a Springfield Loaded 1911A1aobut a month ago, and had the same problem with the ammo that I mentioned as you did, about every 100 rounds. When I switched to Winchester and MagTech, problem cured itself and never rematerialized, even after 250 rounds with no cleaning.
If you do anything, polish the feed ramp. Leave the extractor alone, as it's pretty well factory set to perform well.
You might like to try a 18 pound spring, as this improved my guns performance, but it didn't cure the feed problems.
Again, back to basics, change ammo and try again before assuming that the gun has problems. It's the cheapest, most basic step you should take first.

Yes, Desert Seagull, tell us wht brand of ammo you're using. I assume that the barrel has a bushing vice a cone barrel? Does the malfunction only happen when you start on a new mag, or in the middle of a string of fire?
