Springfield loaded 1911 w/ 6" barrell

I don't know how it happened. Somehow after work, of course, I found myself in the gun shop. Before I knew it I was fondling a Springfield loaded 1911 w/ longslide and 6" barrell. Does anyone have any experience with this particular gun? I have been told I can use 45 super out of it w/o modification, true?

If it was ported, it is a V-16, which is made to shoot .45 Super.

Took mine out the other day for a Final Fall Fling.

The extra weight and porting makes it feel guite a bit different than a standard 1911. Shooting .45ACP through it is a lot like shooting .38 Special out of a six inch revolver. Shooting .45 Super is a lot like shooting .357 Mag. out of the same revolver.:D Fun, but the ammo is pricey.

It comes from the factory with a slightly heavier recoil spring (18lb.) than the standard 1911. I broke mine in with .45ACP, and I had to use a 16lb. spring for the first hundred rounds to get it to cycle. It functions fine now with the factory spring when I shoot .45ACP through it.

It's a little muzzle heavy compared to a standard 1911, and the bull barrel/reverse spring plug makes it a chore for take down/assembly. But, it is well made and fun to shoot.

This one was not ported, does that mean it is not suited for 45 super? Also, are they just meant to use factory 45 super or can really hot handloads be used?

If you go to Springfield's site and look here, you will see the specs for the various Longslides.

The only one that THEY say is rated for .45 Super is the ported V-16. It may be possible to shoot Super in the other models by installing a stronger spring, but I don't know if they recomend it. Not sure I'd chance it on an $800.00 pistol.

Does the un-ported model have a bull barrel, or a standard barrel/bushing set-up?

Not sure on the bull barrel or the bushing. Really wasn't looking that closely to it. Was scared I might like it and end up buying something I hadn't planned on

Easy, this is the first time all year that I haven't had at least 1 gun either on lay-away or being dros'd. The guys there know I'll buy when the right gun shows up...talk about weak!:(
