Would like some input on reliability, functionality and general comments on this pistol and on magazines provided by Springfield.

I've only got 100rounds through mine, but it's been flawless. My only issue with the gun is the aggressive front strap checkering is a little harsh. Other than that I love it.

The EMP has been around for a number of years and has proven to be reliable. The 4-inch model is new, but the longer slide and barrel shouldn't decrease reliability.

Just keep in mind that Springfield is (as far as I know) the only source for magazines. "Standard" 1911 magazines won't fit the EMP.

Not an EMP, but I have an RO Compact in 9mm. Same 4" barrel. Should be very close to the same thing.

I just did a class a couple of weeks ago. Ran 600 rounds through it with zero malfunctions. I'm pretty happy with it.

My wife and I got 1911's for Christmas. I got a Range Officer Compact 9mm and she got the EMP4. Both have ran flawlessly, both had a 6 o'clock hold plus her EMP4 shot to the right. I replaced the front sights on both guns with taller ones to get rid of the 6 o'clock hold. On the EMP4 I also replaced the rear sight with Springfield Armory adjustable sights to cure the shooting right problem and to fine tune the shooting high problem. We really like both guns. I've been using the Range Officer Compact in IDPA. The wife plans to try the EMP4 in IDPA also. Right now she is competing with her Sig 225 A1.

That's a nice pistol but, unfortunately, it is not at all the same as the EMP. The EMP series have what amounts to a 1/8-inch vertical slice taken out of the pistol up through the mag well, resulting in what Springfield called a "short action" 1911 at the time they first introduced the original EMP. Taking that 1/8-inch out of the heart of the pistol radically affects timing, so the EMP pistols really need to be evaluated on their own, not compared to any "standard" sized 1911s.
