Springfield Champion - Mods

Recently got my SS Champion and like it.

Currently would like to make three mods, Tritium sights (yes I will have the front cut for dovetail),upgrading the guide rod and new grips.

As to the guide rod, what do you recommend and why. I'm thinking this may help a little but not fully convinced at this time.

Any other suggestions appreciated.

Brian Bilby seems to think that full length guide rods add more trouble than their worth. So far, that's all I've seen too. I really like my Champion too. I put an Ed Brown magwell on it quite a while ago, and some skateboard tape on the frontstrap. I also attacked the sharp edges on the front of the gun with a fine file so as not to wear through my holsters. Don't like your grips? I like mie fine, but I, too, will probably change mine soon, probably to checkered carbon fiber or very pretty wood. Tritium sights...mmm, maybe just the front sight, maybe. It's a good gun. If you have problems chambering the first round of hp's, try dropping the slide lock to load it rather than racking the slide for the first couple of hundred.

Thanks for the info Frontsight.

If B. Bilby says not to use the full length guide rod I want, he certainly knows more than me about this.

I too have looked at the carbon fiber grips, think they would really complement the stainless looks.

I had thought about smoothing the edges myself. Could you give any more pointers on the best way to do this. Would think you have to take it slow and easy so as not to mess up anything.

Any information appreciated.

I have a SA Champion and a Kimber Compact. I had the Springfield Custom Shop do some extensive mods to my Champion. One of the additions was a FL guide rod. I don't like them on full size guns, but with the reverse barrel bushing set up it was difficult to hold the recoil spring in place while assembling the gun. I do like the ease of assembly with the FL guide rod. I replaced the FL guide rod on my full size Kimber with the conventional rod and like it much better. The full size gun is easier to assemble without the FL rod. I think if the compact models had a conventional barrel bushing I would prefer not to have the FL rod. Jerry
