Springfield Armoury Mil-Spec

Thanks to everyone for your replies to my other 1911 question posts. The more I look at different 1911s the more I like the SA Mil-Spec 1911a1. My question is this: Should the Mil-Spec have the same JHP reliability as other Springfield models or is it hardball only without further smithing? I guess its sort of the question of just how mil-spec is SA's Mil-Spec. Thanks again folks. I ask this question because I don't like the looks of all the stuff that is being hung on the Kimbers, SA's, etc.

I have been told by SA that the Milspec will fire the Federal Hydrashoks and the Rem. Golden Sabers. To verify it just go to their website and drop them an e-mail.

I don't know about Hydro-Shocks but Remington Golden Sabers pretty well follow the same ogive as military ball ammo. I don't have a Springfield Mil-spec 1911A1 but my unthroated WWII Colts, Remington Rands and Ithicas all feed, fire and eject RGS's.

I just got a SA 1911A1 Loaded, the one one step up from the mil spec two weeks ago. So far, I've been able to put about 1000 rounds through it. It feeds everything great, after I polished the feed ramp in the frame.

I had a Mil-Spec Springfield I bought in 92, way before any of the "loaded" versions were around.

It would feed:
Winchester Black Talons
Federal Hydra-Shoks
Ball
H&G 200 gr SWC Hardcast.
These were the only rounds I fired through it.

I would think that Springfield would be using all the same "base" barrels in all pistols, the exceptions being on the "FBI" model and others out of the custom shop. That being said it would not hurt anything to polish the throat and feed ramp.

Ed2000,

I have a Mil Spec Springfield 1911-type I got six years ago. Make sure the feed ramp is smooth and polished and you shouldn't have any problem. I have fed everything under the sun through mine. No problems as long as you use good mags.

Unless the "loaded" models are a whole lot more you might just want to get a loaded model. I've seen price differences of less than $100 between the two. Those additional features cost more than the price difference. OTOH if you're planning to have it as a base gun for adding your own touches that should be fine. I've had my mil-spec since 1989. After a ramp and throat job, I've had one FTF in about 3500+ rounds fired.

Ed,
Yes it will feed hollow points. Make sure you fire at the very least 100 through it before you consider carrying it for protection. One thing I would recommend is polishing the feed ramp.

The Mil-Spec is an outstanding base gun. It is reliable and great for adding custom features down the road.
