Springfield Armory Hi Cap 1911

I have been looking over the ParaOrdnance P14/P16 pistols and finally decided I should look over the SA 1911A1 HiCap too. Where do I start? Beyond their listing on the web page and in the catalog, I have not heard anything about this pistol. Any owners out there? I have a single stack SA 1911 that I love, but what about this double stack??????

One thing I have determined....the factory mags from SA are considerably cheaper than ParaOrd's (Advantage SA). ParaOrd's guns for 2001 have more standard features, like SA's "Loaded" guns (Advantage ParaOrd).

Could use all the insight I can get.

Doesn't anyone own one of these pistols?? Maybe it is the best kept secret on todays handgun market!

Ok, I own one.

I bought it over three years ago, I was going to use it for IPSC. It is not my favorite gun.
Now, let me explain. I love 45 ACP, (Sig 220 is bedside gun) and am now stranger to 1911's (I carried a Colt Officers model).

But there is just something about the pistol I don't like. Maybe the grip just doesn't feel right. I am 5'7'' and don't have the biggest mitts around.

I have been shooting it lately, kind of thinking I should love it.

It does not shoot to point of aim for me. The trigger pull is not that great either. Matter of fact I broke the pistol and had to send it back to Springfield. I am tired and can't think of the proper name for the broken piece right now. It was the piece that holds the pins in between the safety and slide release. That hold piece snapped write off while shooting. I send the frame back to Springfield and they replaced the piece and installed it for me. I just paid postage. Well the slide did not fit correctly and I wound up spending some time with a file.
All in all I have never been comfortable with the gun, it is a gunsafe queen.
Just me and some may think I am crazy.

Funny you should ask...

Not more than 30 minutes ago I sealed mine up in a box for its trip back to Springfield. If the gunsmith is right, they'll be replacing the frame, becasue he says the pin holes (hammer, etc.) are so far out of spec he can't do anything with the (poor) action and the gun is not safe to shoot.

I originally took it in to him to have a beavertail put on, and an action job. It needed both badly. After running through about 300 rounds one day, the web of my hand was pretty badly chewed up. Rough edges on the safety, you see.

Now, maybe the smith was an idiot and there is nothing wrong with the gun. I dunno, I never did business with him before. But I doubt that, because he's been in business here in Salt Lake for quite a while, and came highly recommended. In fact, one of the recommendations came from Dennis Tueller. He's taught at Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, etc., so he can be considered to know a bit about guns. (And he's one fine gentleman, too!)

But I'm not keeping it. Once Springfield is through with fixing it, it's going to a gunsmith buddy of mine (different guy) who is salivating for it. I'm getting a Systema in place of it.

Oh, and I'll second GSMD's comments. Just doesn't feel right. AND it prints like a shotgun. That day at the range was my first in a couple of years, and I couldn't keep it on the paper at 50 feet, standing. Really shook my confidence. A couple of weeks later I took John Farnam's handgun course with a nice (borrowed) plain 1911, and was quite happy with my shooting. I don't usually blame the gun for bad shooting, but...

So, what was it you wanted to know about them? :D

BTW, I'm quite ready to believe I happened to get a lemon, and that my experience is NOT typical of Springfield Armory.
