springfield 30-06

My dad and I recently dug up one of his old rifles he had sitting around it is a springfield bolt action 30-06. Im not sure of the model it has springfield 1989 on it and in the stock it has 1901 stamped in it with a wierd crest around it. Any ideas, sorry for the lack of information and pics, Ill do what I can to get pics up sometime.

The numbers make no sense, not as dates at least. They were not making Springfield .30-06s in 1889 or 1989 or 1901. .30-06 stands for .30 calibre of 1906.
Serial number 1989? Would have been made in 1903 or 1904 as a .30-03 and upgraded 1907-1910.
Krag? Not in 1889 or 1989, maybe they were still building a few as late as 1901. .30 but not .30-06

I think you should look again at the markings. I suspect it says "1898", not 1989, and the caliber is .30-40, not .30-'06. I believe it is an Model 1898 Krag, made at Springfield Armory, but never called a "Springfield".
