Springfield 1911-Mil Spec: Advise please

A local dealer here in the Carolinas is offering a new Springfield 1911-Mil Spec(basic, plain jane version, solid black), for $430. This seems to be a pretty darn good price, but is anyone familar w/ the quality of this firearm? I currently carry Brownings and Colts, and wanting to "expand my horizons." All feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

IMNSLE

Can be decent, but may require work for: 100% reliability, accuracy.

Don't flame me, I've handled lotsa 45's. I recommend Kimber as 1911 starting point (unless of course you INTEND to customize the gun, then the S.A. is a great platform. Their custom shop is awesome!)

The Springfield milspecs are definitely hit or miss with regards to quality. One friend I shoot with bought one and it was 100% reliable and fairly accurate out of the box. Off bags at 50 feet it would do 2 - 3 inch 7 shot groups.

His son's was somewhat in between his and mine regarding accuracy and reliability.

Mine on the other hand was a major POS. It was back to the factory 2 times with no resolution of the accuracy, fte, and mashed brass problems. I ended up taking matters into my own hands and several hundred dollars later it is a fantastic pistol. After a set of BoMars, a Kart Barrel, heavier Wolff recoil spring, Wilson slide stop lever, Wilson mags, and Ed Brown extractor it better be.

If you aren't expecting a lot from a 1911, want to educate yourself on how much hell on earth a pistol can be, or plan on customizing anyway get a Springfield. Otherwise, get another Colt.

I own 2 Springfield Mil-Spec guns and with thousands of rounds through each I can say that they have YET to malfunction. They function as they were designed to. I also own several Colt's, among them is a blue 1991 with the new rollmarks, and while it functions flawlessy, why pay the extra money when the S/A mil-spec is as good or better? They both work with no mods needed.

As to the Colt, I did replace the plastic trigger with a short videcki trigger and the plastic MSH with an arched, blue steel MSH from Wilson combat.

Don't know about SA but, the basic Kimber Custom Classic (Kimber's base model) is the most accurate out of the box pistol I ever had. It's so much better than my P220 that it's a joke. I'm sure the SA is a good gun also!

That's about $70 less than I paid for mine, about a thousand rds. ago. Great basic 1911A1. Zero malfunctions.
I had a Kimber Classic which was of course fancier and more accurate at 25yds, but for the money, SA is the way to go.
