I need a decent enough spotting scope to see holes on a target at around 50 to perhaps 100 yds w/ a .22 and 100-200yds w/ a 30-06. What kind of scope do I need w/o paying an arm and a leg for it? I saw this one on walmart's website...it certainly seems to have the power but i bet the optics are crap...i just want to be able to see holes in the paper...what do you think?

With spotting scopes you really get what you pay for. At 50yds a good pair of 10x binos may be enough, but at 200yds you'll need not only magnification but also really good clarity. If you wear glasses you'll also need plenty of eye relief. I tried a cheap $120 spotting scope and quickly replaced it. I would save up a minimum of $250-300 and catch a sale. My experience is that neither SWFA or Eagle Optics will steer you wrong and may have some sales going. I'd check with both.

I just go out and set up binoculars and check after every shot
for anything over 100 yards. Unless your looking to get serious
about plinking or what ever your shooting at. 12x nocs should do
you just fine.. especially at 50-200 yards..

For casual shooting figure out how far away you can clearly see the holes unaided. If it's 10 yards then you'll need 20x minimum to see as well at 200. If you can clearly see the holes further away then you can get away with less. If you're trying to spot for precision shots then you'll want more magnification.

Lot's of clubs and ranges have rental spotting scopes that you can try for size. The quality is usually so-so but it's a way to get an idea.
