Sportman 78 barrel

I bought a Remington Sportsman 78 a few months ago and I've taken it to the range more times than I care to count. Now the old (looks original) stock is starting to crack a little bit so I'm in the market for a new stock. After shopping around for a while, I keep seeing something about stocks with a hinged floor plate. What is a hinged floor plate for and will my 78 fit a stock with one?

Essentially any 700 stock for the standard-length (270/30-06) action should fit it. You will of course need the floorplate hardware if you want to go that route.

What is the floor plate for anyway?

A floor plate allows you to unload all of the rounds in the magazine at once. You do not have to operate the bolt to cycle every round to unload the gun.

A good video, FYI, the first example would be extremely rare.

Your 78 is an ADL version.

Your best bet for a replacement stock is to look for a factory takeoff on ebay or one some place like gunbroker, the classified on this and other gun related forums. Folks often buy a high end aftermarket stock and sell brand new takeoffs dirt cheap. I've seen synthetics sell for $35 and walnut for around
$100. There are very, very few ADL options for after market stocks other than high end $500+ stocks

It would not be worth the expense to convert to BDL. The parts alone, not counting the stock would cost more than your rifle is worth.

Your ADL design has several advantages, and all things considered I would just as soon have my rifles that way. It reduces cost and weight. Since there is no cutout in the stock for the floorplate, the stock is stiffer, and theoretically more accurate. While rare, floorplates have been known to open and dump your ammo on the ground. Many dangerous game guides weld theirs shut just to eliminate that possibility.

I've mostly decided I'm going to stick with the ADL. Definitely not worth the time, money, and effort required.

Thanks for the info everyone

When you slap an ADL stock on it, it'll look like this-
