Spirit of the Sport

I've been posting on TFL since last
November;lurking considerably longer.

What you folks haven't known is that
your discussions have, for some time,
been fodder for my nationally syndicated
radio program. Each week I would search
discussion forums like this one to stay
updated on the latest "outdoor oriented"
news.

My show is "Spirit of the Sport". It has
been for the past four and a half years
the only national outdoor oriented show
available..There are, and have been other
radio programs limited to shooting,
hunting, or fishing; but none which
offered something for every outdoor
enthusiast.

I just concluded the final program minutes
ago. It was show number 215.
Over the four plus year run, I've had
the pleasure of interviewing the best of
the best outdoor personalities; including
TFL's own Rich Lucibella.

It has been a great experience. You folks
were important to the many
shows we did on firearms, shooting, and
the Second Amendment.

I just wanted to thank you.

Sport,
Was it your decision to end the show?

...defend the 2nd., it protects us all.
No fate but what we make...

Sport...

Why is the show concluded?
Hope all is well with you, personally.

I do remember and appreciate that you were the first (and only) National broadcast of TFL...in gracia

Yes, it was our decision to end the
show.

In radio/tv, four years is a long run.

When we finally "pulled the plug" we had
nearly fifty stations carrying the show
coast to coast. The problem is/was
advertisers don't seem to understand radio
as well as they do TV and print.

In truth, talk radio (which we were) is a
great vehicle for advertising. Listeners
are "listening" to the show..It's not
background "noise" like music radio.

When one plays commercials the studies show
people listen to them.

Even though logic and studies support the
concept, few advertisers know how to deal
with talk radio. It's "controversial" or
"It's too specialized". What they don't
realize is that those "specialized listeners" are the people they want to reach.
In our case, it was the outdoor enthusiast.

I think we did a good job presenting the
outdoor "experience" in a positive light.

We talked about it all..Safari hunting, fly
fishing, hiking,and most importantly,
guns and gun rights.

Again, the contributors at TFL turned out
to be the single best source of quality
information about firearms and shooting.

You should be proud of what you have here.

I certainly am proud to be a TFL member.

I think most of us here are proud as well.
I feel its a privlage and I am grateful for it.
You got any of these shows recorded? I never heard of it before. Then again I never listen to the radio - all the stations in Utah are pretty lame - kinda gave it up.
If not recordings - do you have transcripts?

George,

Yes, all 215 of them are on tape.

I'm sure I have some with outdoor folks
you'd enjoy hearing. Our original concept
was to talk with the best known outdoor
writers and columnists so listeners could
put voices to names;

We've had almost all the writers from the
mainstream hunting/fishing publications,
as well as a lot of outddoor book authors.

Names you might recognize: Peter Hathaway
Capstick, Gene Hill,Patrick F. McManus,
Massad Ayoob, Ken Hackathorn,Jim Zumbo,
Jameson Parker, Steve Bodio, John Barsness
Neal Knox, Jim Carmichel, Jim Hamm, John
Holt,Datus Proper, Gary LaFontaine,
Bob Loveless,Jerry Gibbs,Michael McIntosh,
Jerry Ahern,Ken Wilson,Lenny McGill,
David Maas. etc.

We tried to cover the outdoor
organizations too: GOA,NRA,Second Amend-
ment, Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited,
Safari Club,varmit Hunters Assoc.etc.

Our last show's guest was Nick Lyons of
Lyons Publishing. Nick may be the most
important "outdoor" publisher in America.
His list of authors is impressive. Nick,
himself is a gentle man and author of over
twenty books, some classics of flyfishing.

If you want a tape of a show or two George
let me know..I'll make you a copy..No
charge.

Heck Yes! I would LOVE that!
Send me an emial, and I will send you my info...
The shows regarding guns and gun rights are the only ones I am interested in... That and Patrick F. McManus's interview - that guy is just too funny. Wait - he is the guy that wrote The Grasshopper Trap, right?
I would be most pleased and in your debt sir!
Thank you.
