Sphinx SDP Range Report

Fun day at the range shooting the Sphinz SDP Compact, the CZ75 TS, the SIG X-5, the HK p7 and a modified Ruger 10-22. Busy, busy!

The SDP continues to impress me. It's still tight; the slide fails to lock back on empty mag about 40% of the time. It's continuing to improve. The trigger isn't as smooth, or as light as I first thought. But, what can one expect when shooting at the same time as the other four guns, all of which have trigger pull in the 2 pound range. I expect it it will get smoother and lighter with more use; still under 300 rounds fired. Dead accurate out to 15 yards. Later, I plan to do some shooting at 25 yards with it.

What can one say about the CZ75 TS? A whale of a bargain. It hits what I point it at, if I can see it. It's been more accurate than my X-5 thus far.

The X-5 has reached a 1,000 rounds so I adjusted the rear sight just before the last target today. It's been shooting good groups high and right with a couple of bulls eyes each outing. The sight adjustment has pulled the group down and left. We'll see if it needs further adjustments.

Not much to say about the HK p7. Up to 10 yards it's very accurate. At 15 yards I was able to keep most of the five shot groups in a 5 inch circle. I haven't run 100 rounds thru it yet. Using the cocking handle is still new to me. Very light, smooth trigger; m/b the lightest of the five guns.

Ruger 10-22, a rifle; at 35 yards it will shoot a 1/2 group, if I'm up to it.

For those folks drooling over a X-5 L1 which are practically unavailable these days; spend half (or less) money and get equal performance. It's not as pretty!

The SDP should be on everyone's list.

If you carry, you should consider a p7. And, a couple of additional loaded mags.

I wouldn't expect it to get much lighter, but it MIGHT get a bit smoother. The best short-term solution is to order a 17 lb "compact" CZ hammer spring from Wolff Springs and install it. It'll take about a minute to get the grips off (using the tool they provide), another minute to take the old spring out, another to install the new spring and replace the grips. (Trying to do the same thing with a CZ takes a good bit more time.)

As several of us have noted, Cajun Gun Works has a spring kit that will make the trigger even lighter, and just as reliable. (I tried a 16lb. spring and had ignition problems. The 17lb. spring worked for me -- but others, including WVsig, had ignition issues with that spring.) I've picked up several new guns (4) in trades recently, so haven't gotten around to installing the Cajun Gun Works spring kit in mine, yet...

The CGW spring kit includes a lighter firing pin spring as well a lighter hammer spring. The lighter firing pin spring reduces the power you need to get a successful primer hit. With that I have been able to go as low as the CGW 13.5# spring. David at CGW was kind enough to send me a 11.5# hammer spring for testing and while it works probably 90% of the time, it gets light strikes too regularly for me to trust it.

Thanks for the info and advice. Stopped by my LGS today to pickup a SIG p210. While I was there fondled a HK P30SK, or is it a P30?? ? Nice gun, I think it was a V3; it had a decocker. Between the date codes and the variants I'm always confused by HK. But, like some of their guns.
