speer lawman .40 s$w VERY bad in my walther p99

went to the range saturday and used some speer lawman in my walther .... JUNK!!!
every 4 rounds, the striker would hit the primer and barely make a dent in the primer ! .. and the slide kept on sticking open after every few rounds ... I WAS P#SSED .. let me tell you ..
so i immediately drove to my dealer ( which is around the corner ) and he took a good look at the pistol and found nothing wrong with it .. he then went out back and looked up the trouble history on the walther p99 in .40 sw and found NOTHING in the computer or book ... i was relieved when i heard that ... then he asked if i saved any of the unfired rounds with the hardly dented primers .. so of course i did .. he took a real good look and said that the striker / firing pin ( whatever ) was striking the primer REAL HARD .. and that the spring had MORE than enough tension .. so he said that speer is made my cci blazer and the primers are REAL TOUGH ... meaning the metal they are made of is hard .. he said to switch brands and to keep the pistol nice and lubed up ... he said he noticed that the gun was real dry.. which it was, but i had just cleaned and lubed it the other week .. so i didnt take it down to lube it up before i went shooting saturday .. o well .. i still take EXCELLENT care of ALL my firearms .. i just should have checked for lube before i went out to the range.. it must have dried up in the safe .. i guess .. anyway .. POINT IS .. stay away from speek lawman ammo .. .or any speer ammo ..
of course my b@ll busting buddy was with me and WOULD NOT STOP busting on my ' malfunctioning pea shooting, POS ... ' .. i was ready to kill him .. argh .. o well .. at least its not the gun ...
i love my gun ...
PS .. john travolta was sporting the p99 in SWORDFISH .. just noticed last night when i watched it again ...
merry xmas .. later

Man, sorry to hear about your range trip. Maybe you just got a bad "run" of ammo. I shoot Lawman in my pt940 and in a Kahr.
Its been very good so far. Accurate ammo and hits everytime.
That and S&B are my favorite 40 FMJ...You may want to try it again. If not, try S&B it has a real kick for target ammo.
I also shoot tons of blazer ammo in all of my other guns..it works
just as well. I dont know about the hard primer thing...never heard of it or had a problem
Shoot well

If the striker barely made a dent in the primer, how did your dealer come to the conclusion that it was hit real hard?

yeah i shoot regular cci blazer with the aluminum casings in my walther p99 also .. and its fine ..actually i love it ... its the speer.. i think i got a bad batch of ammo ..
i know the guns fine .. o well .. the only reason i got the speer is because it was the cheapest next to the blazer which my dealer was out of ..
i think that cci blazer in 40 sw is the BEST for plinking ..

CSKS ... i should clarify .. my firing pin NORMALLY makes OVER a semi-sherical dent into primers .. the rounds that didnt fire DID have solid hits ( solid enough for my dealer to come to the conclusion that the firing pin hit the casing VERY hard ) he checked the spring tension on the firing pin and said it was EXTREMELY strong ..
so in his conclusion, he stated that in the past, from his experience, speer has had what he calls '' hard primers'' meaning the metal is hard enough on certain cases to withstand the full blow of a firing pin .. thats all he said .. i believe him because i have used MANY types of ammo in that pistol and this is the ONLY time this had happened and ONLY with this ammo ..

Uzi,

My buddy's got a Walther P99, and in his weapon, all brands of ammo we've tried (Federal Am Eagle, Speer Lawman, PMC, UMC) have caused this kind of behavior in his weapon. It's never on the first DA pull, usually on the third or fourth SA strike. The striker falls, nothing happens, he pulls the trigger again (now in DA mode) and the round goes off.

He called Walther about it, they referred him to S&W. S&W just told him to send it in. Now, he paid the extra $ for a Walther and not a S&W99, and he understandably wants Walther and not S&W to service the weapon. He's still wrangling it out as the described behavior continues...

Teuf,

If your buddy doesn't want to deal with S&W then send it to Earl's Repair Service. He's an exclusive importer/ warranty service center for Walther. His web page is:

Top quality stuff IMO. I've shot several boxes of Lawman .45 in my G30 and never had a failure of any kind. It's also very accurate. I really like the brass for reloading too.

Maybe a batch of hard primers in that lot of ammo. No experience with the P-99, but have had a similar problem with my Glock 9mms and some lots of Fiocchi ammo. I think that striker fired pistols are more sensitive to this type of problem.

For what it's worth, my G21 has never choked with Speer Lawman or Blaser.

I've reloaded with several thousand CCI primers and shot many in striker weapons, including the "weak hitting" Glock striker system. NO failures.

While you hear zero about CCI primer problems, you do hear the occasional hiccup with P99's. I'll keep using CCI.

A friend and I split a case of Magtech, he has a P99, Magtech shoots very well as does Speer Lawman. I have had the same thing happen with my Steyr M40 shooting S+B, but in my friends Walther it was no problem. My guess, just a bad batch.

well .. im getting mixed reviews from this post ... actually .. its kind of scarey to think that a new pistol like mine could possibly have problems with it .. i took it apart and scrubbed every nook of it yesterday and will take it out and shoot some other stuff in it .. if the same problem persists, then im trading the d@mbed thing in for a SIG ... the full sized one where you can interchange barrels from .357 sig to .40 s&w by simply swapping barrels ..
BUT .. if it is the pistol .. let me tell ya .. i will be PI$$ed ... !!!
i like the P99 SOOOOOOO much !!! argh ! .. always somethin!!!!!
i'll let you guys know .. thanks .. keep the info comin ..

Uzi, I don't know what kind of help I can offer, but my experience with my 9mm P99 has been utterly fantastic. Not a single FTF, FTE or ignition issue in over 1600 rounds, straight out of the box, with many hundreds of Speer Lawman mixed in there with PMC and Mag. I am continually amazed by the reliability of this gun, and it's one that I feel I can trust my life to.

It sounds to me like there might be a bad batch of .40 ammo with tough primers, or the fella that worked on your gun was feeding you a line, to get you out of his hair. Is there a way for you to find another P99 in .40 to compare it to, and see if you have the same problems?

Also, even if you do need to send the gun back, I wouldn't consider that to be an indication that you have a lemon, but you should definitely keep an eye on it, and register the issue on Walther's radar. Should something come up in the future, you'll have a service record of the complaint. Many guns, even the modern ones like we have, need to go back for tweaking. Hell, even Porsche has a car that needs a twiddle or two sometimes.

well... i believe that it was a bad batch of ammo .. like i said, i will follow up with some other ammo and post my results in the very near future .. however .. in regards to your comment about my dealer who took a realatively short look at it .. he is strait .. no bs from him .. what comes out of his mouth is on the level .. no doubt ..
and thankyou for the rest of your info .. i will use it wisely ..
