Speer Gold Dot 9mm (147-gr JHP)

Does anyone have any experience with this load, or know where I can find some more information about it?

I appears to have a VERY deep cavity, which leads me to believe that it would dump its energy very well in a defensive situation.

My favorite local gun shop just got a shipment in, and I'm thinking about picking some up.

Any thoughts would be very welcome.

I too like Gold Dots. They do have a awesome cavity when compared to others and maybe more importantly their quality control seems real good too. As far as the 147 gr. bullets go, what barrel length are you using. Remember the heavier the bullet the more velocity it may require to get reliable expansion. Longer barrels get more velocity. Some may disagree. The slow and heavy vs. light and fast is the oldest arguement known to man.

147 gr. Gold Dot is supposed to be very good (I hope so, I just ordered a case of it). If you're interested in a review of how well the Gold Dot performs in ballistic gelatin tests, here's one that I've found helpful:

From the linked article:

"If your handgun has a barrel length less than 4 inches, consider the 147 grain Gold Dot JHP or the 124 grain +P JHP."

I guess that means they are of the opinion that the 147-gr Gold Dot JHP would be a good choice for my P239. I thought the same thing, so I guess I'll pick up a couple of boxes. Thanks for the input.

For a short barrel like that i would recommend 124gr +p's. I like 124 gr for 9mm so i get the penetration, but not to much like a 147gr. Also, from a short barrel, a 124gr+p would be better. The 147gr may not be able to get up to speed to have reliable expansion.
