Speer Gold Dot 12x +P 9mm question

I am checking out different 9mm rounds for personal defense and like what I'm hearing about both Win Ranger and Speer Gold Dot.

My CCW is prob either a Kahr K9 or MP 9c. Both with short barrels. I like the idea of the Gold Dot for short barrels, but was wondering if there is any problem using the short barrel rounds in a longer barrel, so I don't need two 9mm SD loads?
BTW, I already have some Ranger RA9T ammo, so I am not sure I even need to change, but want all my ducks in a row for the future.

So, any probs shooting short barrel formulas through a traditional barrel?

There isn't a problem in using them in longer barrels.

On average velocity increases about 20fps for evey additionla inch of barrel you have. For 9mm that pretty much stops at 16 or so inches since I don't know of any carbines that have longer barrels than that.

Even in a carbine any 9mm round loaded within SAAMI specifications isn't going to have a problem in and of itself. There may be some loading that create a recoil impulse that cause the gun to cycle in such a way that it catches the spent case befor it's totally cleared - causing a stovepipe.

Usually refer to that as being a finicky eater. Rohrbaughs are that way, they can be particular about what ammo they fire. Owners report that 124gr Gold Dots usually work just fine in them.

The only issue that I could see is for JHP ammo that's specifically been designed to expand and hold together at handgun velocites being shot out of a carbine and it's going about 240 fps faster than the designer anticipated and when it hits a target the petals that are designed to peel back so gracefully at 1180 fps are now going around 1400 fps and instead of peeling back gracefully they sheer off, and the same thing with coming out of the jacket. It's not the end of the world but the bullet isn't going to perform the same as it would at lower velocity. But that is an extreme example - you're not going to see that going from a sub compact to a full sized pistol.

"Rohrbaughs are that way, they can be particular about what ammo they fire."

And yet the R9 I bought used 4.5 years ago has worked with everything I've tried from WWB to S&B to Fiocchi to various Georgia Arms loads, etc. I guess you just never know until to try it. And the usual FedRemWin stuff works, too. I still have a large supply of GA ammo loaded with Gold Dots, so that's what I use.

You won't get as much speed in a longer barrel from "short barrel" ammo as you would conventional loads. In theory, the idea of "short barrel" ammo is to maximize velocity while reducing muzzle blast in the short barrel. It does that by using a fast powder that develops pressure quickly and drops off quickly (relatively speaking). As such, the gains from a longer barrel will be less, but perfectly functional.

My rohrbaugh has been reliable with many/ all types of ammo I have tried over the last two years.

I use GoldDot 124 standard loads in my carry gun. They work well from the tests I've done. I don't use the +P ammo because I have a couple of pistols not +P rated.

I wouldnt exactly call either of those guns a "short barrel" gun but thats my opinion. You will be just fine with standard 9mm offerings 124 grains or lighter. I carry 124gr. +P Speer Gold Dot in my K9. But to answer your question, you won't have any problems shooting the Speer short barrel loads out of your guns if you choose to.

You're good to go with what you've got. Press on. Might want to get some cheaper stuff at Walmart for practice.

You can go to the bank with 124 grain Gold Dots SB's from a 3.5 inch barrel. Full expansion, 10-12 inches of penetration through four layers of denim over wetpack. That computes to 15-18 inches in ballistic gel. They don't stop for that, you better have some good running shoes on. And every twenty-round box is printed with the words SELF DEFENSE on it so juries can readily identify it's intended purpose.

Which is, of course, identical with your intentions that fateful day when the other guy was the second place winner in a gunfight.
