Speed Strips, Load 5 or 6

I noticed a couple of pictures of speed strips that were used with a five shot revolver on here. The strips were loaded with five rounds, one less than they are built to take.

Here's a question for you speed strip and J frame users. Do you load five or six rounds in your speed strips? I load six, figuring that it adds two extra rounds of ammo which I might appreciate having with me if things get weird.

I suppose the argument might be made that if you have six in the strip, you might try to load the sixth one into a chamber that was loaded already and lose time that way. I maintain that if you practice by loading five from a loader with six in it you'll do that same thing if the elephant, and that slickster Mr. Murphy, show up in the parking lot some evening.

What say you?

same goes: i have always used HKS speedloaders for 5 shot revolvers, and feel most comfortable with this set up. i agree, repetition is the key to reliable actions under stress.

speed strips

The extra speed strip I carry in my pocket while carring a 5 shot revolver has always had 5 rounds in it.

I find it less akward when practicing reloading with a speed strip if there is olnly 5.

I sure hope I never have to reload under stress
with a speed strip

I know what you mean. "Slow Strips" would be a more accurate name when I'm using them. They are slow when it is warm and even slower when it is cold.

They are the easiest way to carry and hide ammo for my snubby though.

I carry 6 in speed strips as "extra ammo" and HKS Speedloaders as "re-loads". If, for some reason, you fire one or two rounds, reloading from a speedloader is "breaking up sets". The only time I load five in a speed strip is to make it fit a dump pouch that was set up for six single cartridges - spacing of six in the speed strip is usually to wide, but it can be convenient carry for them at times.

Alternate speed strip

Instead of the Bianchi Speed Strip, I'll occasionally use an SKS stripper clip to hold .38/.357 ammo. The rim diameters are the same, and it will hold 10 rounds in a smaller, more durable package than even an auto magazine.

You could kill two birds w/ one stone this way....

I cut off the last hole for a total of 5. It fits in pocket a little better, could also remove the "tab" if you felt to inclined.

When carryin as a back up for a five hole gun, I carry five in the strips. Fit better in watch pocket, ammo out of sight but tab and empty hole stickin out for quick grab.

Used to be that work trousers had watch pockets that were sized to carry a pocket watch. Now the vestigal pocket, when there is one, seems to be sized in proportion to the trouser size. Biguns have big pockets and little ones have little pockets.

My watch pockets barely deep enough to hide five rounds. Friend can put a whole Chief's special in his.

Stripper clips and autoloader magazines work well too. Ticks off Coonan shooters when you usin Coonan mags for revolver loaders.:D

I cut mine down so they only hold 5. I carry 2 of them in my back left pocket. But even with tons of practice, I hope I've got good cover if I ever really need them.

i load 5 for my J-frame and leave the last hole, closest to the tab, empty. i like the extra purchase it gives me when "loading and peeling"

5 fits better in the "watch pocket" of my jeans while a speed loader will go in but be hard to get out...bigger pockets mean the speedloader goes for the ride.

i figure my 642 and 2 speed strip, or one strip and a loader is 15 rounds...i don't think a couple of extra rounds will make a difference

I always load six out of habit from when I carried them in dump pouches for duty. Then pulled one strip out for pocket carry off duty. The thought of one extra round is comforting.Better to have it than not.tom.

I also load five, leaving the hole closest to the tab empty. I find it easier to handle the Speed Strip this way.

I carry 5 in my strip, with the hole closest to the tab left open. This rides in my right front trouser pocket. In my right front vest pocket resides an HKS SL with 5 more....and sometimes, there's a Safariland SL in the other vest pocket, and two more speed strips distributed in various pants pockets. (BTW, the Safariland SL is not a competition type, and is much less bulky than the HKS-but still too bulky to carry in a pants pocket.)
