Speed Loader Prefs

Did a search on speed loaders and didn't really see what I was looking for. I have a couple HKS for my 629, but I don't really care for them. Anyone have a favorite brand of speed loader? Why do you like it? I'd like a couple for my 629 and my 686+.

Other than competition models, there are basically two styles: The HKS and Safariland. The HKS has a knob that is turned to release the cartridges, and the Safariland releases by pushing the entire body of the loader forward towards the cylinder.

I use both styles, but tend to prefer the Safariland Comp-1, which is really compact compared to the HKS. The Comp-2 is about the same size as the HKS, and has more gripping surface.

Speedloaders are cheap enough that you can buy one of each type and see which one you prefer.

For the N-frame Smiths you are pretty much limited to the HKS. But in anything .38 or .357 you should be able to get the Safariland speedloaders.

If it's for competition, ignore me... but if not, I personally prefer the Bianchi speed strip over the loaders. It's flat, fits in your pocket, loads 2 at a time, and I payed $6 a pair for mine.

I've used both the Safariland and the HKS. The HKS are more reliable. The HKS will wear out. In critical applications I throw the HKS's away long in advance of there being any danger of them wearing out as a safety measure.

I have HKS and Safariland, prefer HKS. Also use speed strips for top off or when clothing makes speedloaders a bit difficult to conceal.

Sam....love the smell of unique in the mornin

Safariland does make a speed loader for the .44 N – frame. I have one in front of me right now. I have found them to be faster for me than the HKS but I don’t believe that they have as long a service life. A speed-strip can be modified to take .44 cases if you wish. My all time favorite speed loader is a full moon clip.

I use all three. For competition, I mainly use the Safariland models, the model with the tower I have found to be the quickest in reloading in Match 1,2 and 4 of the Match 1500 in PPC. For carrying my J Frame, the HKS as the Safariland is a pain to load. I also carry the speed strip on duty as it is the easiest way to carry a reload for the backup.
