How can Special Weapons LLC manufacture copies of Heckler & Koch weapons?

How is their quality?

Opinions?

Do a search for "SW5" and you'll find plenty of information. They can clone HK's like every other arms manufacturer clones every other original design in history.

As I understand it, they build a parts conversion, using combinations of US made and original HK parts. Only in the last few months did they work out a method to stamp their own receivers. There's really not a heck of a lot to it.

Keep in mind, I actually haven't fired one, but I've been VERY keen on picking one up and doing a lot of research....

You'll find that Todd, the guy who runs the outfit, get's usually an extremely bad rep from a lot of people. I'm not going to say whether or not it is warranted, but as I recall he's been banned from a number of message boards. I've heard of problems with customer service, people getting screwed out of cash, etc. But I've also heard of broken parts replaced within days.

As for quality, the original runs (late 99's I think) were piss poor. Poor quality finish, poor workmanship, lots of FTF and feeding issues. However, a lot of the newer SW5's seem to only have the initial under 5 hiccups, then go on to be quite sweet. Heard of a few probs with the PAD, as well.

Bottom line is this.....it's a 12-1500 dollar copy of an HK94. It is not an HK, and I wouldn't expect it to be. Then again, your average HK94 goes for about 3-4000. Quality and finish will not be up to HK spec, nor do I think will performance (not saying it'll suck, though). BUT, if all you really want is a plinker and don't want to spend the money for a real HK94, or you're not planning on an MP5 conversion, it wouldn't hurt to look into it. DEFINITELY make sure you pick one up new....and if possible I'd find a place to test fire one.

Apparently they've also got their SL8 mag conversion off the ground. Looks quite nice.....initial reports say they're pretty good. Like any venture, SW is new, so some issues are almost to be expected, and they seem to be making some effort to rectify others.

I had a SW5 ( traded it for a HKSL8-1) Reason being the guy at the store wanted the gun sooo bad he made me an offer...I couldn't refuse.
As far as the SW5....It was a VERY good Gun! If you want a HK94 but want to save $2000.00 It's worth it.
There is a new Stamped one coming out in the first part of next year. If you were to put the Hk and SW next to each other, I don't think you'll be able to tell the difference except for the "Made in Germany" stamp.
The current model take all the HK parts and functions great.
AS stated above, The first run of the guns had FTE\FTF problems due to weak springs.

Quality of the Special Weapons guns is questionable. There are some that are perfect and some that are crap. The company owner is supposedly hard to deal with and sometimes comes through on promises and sometimes does not. I have heard of exceptional customer service from him as well as piss-poor customer service.

If you are going to buy one of these guns, the person/business to buy it from is D&S Gun/Gun-finder at either dsgun.com or gun-finder.com (make sure it is hyphenated). A guy named Todd Davis runs this two-part business...he is NOT the same Todd who owns Special Weapons, LLC. This Todd at D&S Gun is one of the largest, if not THE largest, dealer/distributor for Special Weapons. Todd DAVIS at D&S Gun is a great guy who, despite the problems Special Weapons, LLC, has, will go out on a limb for you in terms of customer service. He is a good guy to do business with and I really have no idea why he is a distributor for Special Weapons, considering the reputation of the "other" Todd and the questionable quality control there. I can't say enough good about the Gun-finder. I've bought several firearms from him over the years and have been pleased with all of them and with the service that I have received.

Again, though...some of the Special Weapons guns that I have messed with were perfect. Some were most definitely NOT. It's a relatively new company that is still growing and learning. It does have great potential, but they have a lot of learning to do.

My 91 clone

I have been looking for Good CETME 91/ H&K 91 Clone for some time now and finally came across one at a local gun shop it is a / Special Weapons so with much hesitation and much prompting from my friends at PVG here in AZ, I bought it . and I took it yesterday too try it out and it functioned perfectly on hiccups ran 60 rd though it worked fine. The only thing that came up was needing to raise the front sight it has the h&k front that is held in with a role pin any suggestion here will also be using a scope so will be needing a scope mount thanks

have a awesome day

Elevation on the 91's was done at the rear sight. Doesnt your gun have a 91 type rear sight?

If its true to the HK's receiver, an HK, or better yet, an ARMS "claw mount" is what you want for the scope. The ARMS is more versatile, holds zero just as well, and is about half the price of the HK mounts.

One other thing youll want to look for, especially if you reload, is a port buffer. They do away with the beat up brass issue.
