Special license needed to buy Remington?

My father just returned from the local gun store and said that they told him that starting next year you will have to have a special permit to purchase a Remington Police Sniper rifle. Does anyone know any details? Is it true? If so what kind of permit?

Shocking! Ahh, the return of the Special Permit (whatever that is). Next you'll be telling me a gun dealer lied to make a sale. "Better buy it quick; next year you'll need a `special permit' to buy one, even from Robar."

In the gun culture, there are 3 huge lies that bother me.
1. "I was in the SAS, RLI, Selous Scouts, SEALs, Danger Rangers, SFs, etc."
2. "I only paid $3.78 for that Singer 1911."
3. Anything a gun seller says.

I remember in `89 when Southern dealers were coming to gun shows here pushing Mini-14s. "Better buy it quick because next year you'll need a special permit to buy one and next year they will all have closed magazines . . . blah, blah, blah, ya'll." I don't know how well it worked and I'm sickened that traitor Bill made more money off their rubbish.

Don't believe the hype.

"Special Permit" is a tad vague. Sounds like BS.

Note: Remington only sells their "good stuff" (i.e. police sniper rifles, ugly 870's) to LEO wholesalers. Yes, this stuff finds its way to the local gunshop, but Remington as a manufacturer does discriminate that way.

utvols, what KSFreeman sez about "special permits" is true.

It is also true that some manufacturers request that certain products only be sold to law enforcement, and some stores do cooperate. This is not required by any law, however, and some stores pay no heed to the request.

(And gimme a break, KS! I've had lots of come-back-for-more customers at gun shows! :D )

Tell your father to go buy a 700VS. It's the same exact barreled action with a different HS Precision stock. It will also cost him about $150 less. I guess Remington has been asking some of their dealers to only sell the 700P or PSS or whatever they are calling it now to LE only. But some dealers will still sell them. Hoplite who is in Shotgun News sells them for about $699. If he really wants one just have your father get a copy of the FFL from a dealer, most do this with no hassle and if they don't I wouldn't deal with them, and send it and a check to Hoplite. Then Hoplite will ship the rifle to the dealer and all you have to pay the dealer is the transfer cost which they charge. It shouldn't be more than $25-50.

Many thanks for the quick responce. I was arguing the fact with my dad when I posted the thread. I tried to explain to him that there are two ways a special license is required. 1. from the manufacturer, which is impossible to enforce. 2. from the government and no new gun laws have been passed in 7 years.

If anyone else would like to sound off I would appreciate your advice.

Remington, like so many other manufactures, requires a dept. letterhead for individual LEO purchase. That is just to get a better price though. Several dealers twist this policy as a means to perpetuate the allure of a 700PSS by claiming a "special permit" is required of non LEOS.
Personally I think any dealer that claims this probably can't find one. Or they are gougers and will screw you anyway.
At any rate. I would not pay more than 699.00 for a 700P in .308 there are plenty out there from reputable dealers at this price.
I almost forgot. There is a pawn shop in Chatanooga that has 700P rifles in stock for 649.00 I don't remember the name but their logo has a wagon wheel and maybe a canon on it. They always set up at the Bill Goodman shows in Nashville. This same shop does a big business in LE trade-ins also.
Hope this helps.

utvols ,

Save yourselves the trouble and by a Browning or a U.S.R.A.C. (formerly Winchester). If Remington or their dealers want to play games let them. There is plenty of room for them to go down in flames like S&W. When the Andy Cuomo/HUD/S&W BS came out Browning and Glock were the first to the microphones & TV cameras to tell the Gov't to screw off. Integrity should mean something.

I have an Iver Johnson M1 Carbine I bought for $3.78. I'm selling it for $500 because my fellow Navy SEALS told me that special permits would be required to purchase it next year.

GET'M WHILE THEY'RE HOT!!!!

:D

The Truth on Remington LE gun sales...

Currently, Remington does NOT limit the PSS to letterhead purchases. They sell LE guns to LE distributors ONLY, but that distributor can sell to whomever they wish. I got this info directly from the Remington LE liaison. This info has been posted on this board dozens and dozens of times. :)

Yep as to what 700PSS says. Just find a dealer to pick one up for you. BTW, I prefer the Varminter. Action & bbl are the same, but the stock is slimmer and handier for field carry. Remember, a rifle must be portable and comfortable to carry.

PSS Barreled actions

In .308, they are identical to the Varmint model. HOWEVER, in .223, the PSS in 1-9" twist and the Varmint is 1-12" twist.

The PSS finish is parkerized, the Varmint is a matte blue. according to Remington there is a difference.

With the HS VS varmint stock and the HS PSS stock, the grip is the most different. I prefer the fat PSS with palm swell. I never thought the PSS was heavier as they are both heavy. :)

I just wish Remington would use a STEEL triggerguard/floorplate assembly!
