speaking of ammo

Yup.

.38/.357 mag is a stand-by & 90%+ of our shooting is with the "bullseye load" (2.7 grs Bullseye under a 148 gr HBWC - probablly the premeir accuate load & a dandy small-game getter to 50 yards too boot) ... really nothing in a "non-lethal" situation you'd need more. Easy & cheap to shoot & I'd say you really wouldn't need anything else except to provide for anything defensive-wise - you could boost that for a "better round."

Plenty more for a .38 defense round - the 158 gr lead HP is the old FBI stand-by - try the Fed Nyclad in this weight.

The .38's right at the bottom for a defensive round, but still pretty potent all told. A very accurate target round & way suitable for small game.

Certaintly has its place .... & even for defense.

Nothing to sneeze at.

Agree with Labgrade.

Also, for heavy frame guns...
148gr HBWC backwards over a stiff load will punch a car door and the driver. But you have to get em up to 38-44 strength to make em work well.

RBCD 38 Spl. 60 gr. 1705 fps / 385 flbs!! No kidding I thought I was light at 124. Whats the ballistics of the others mentioned here?

Far as that HBWC bullseye load, off the top of my head, a 25 yard zero would probably give you a -2" at 50 yards. Just guessing, but close enough for who it's for.

Certainly not what you'd call a defense load, but it'll do turkeys at 50 yards & I'd not want to get shot with it at any range.

I don't figure foot-pounds much. If the bullet penetrates to/through the vitals & is accurate enough, then it's a "good bullet." Put the right thing in the right place with enough umph & the job'll get done no matter.

My preference is Tamara's load, specifically Remington +P 158g SWC HPs. But my dept. mandates Gold Dot, so I'm currently carrying 125g Speer Gold Dot +P HPs in a M-37 Airweight Chief as an off-duty/backup.

I've popped two javelina with the Remington 158g load, and was impressed at the expansion (looked like lead nickles), but not overly impressed with penetration out of 6" from about 40-60 feet away, broadside. Both initial shots were found on the far side against the hide. (both coup de grace's, however, were through and through. Hm. )

BTW, I'm moving this thread to the Handguns: Revolvers forum.

Right now I'm carrying 147 grain Hydra-shock +P+. I figure if it expands great, if not it's still got close to the shape and weight of the 158 Grain semi-wadcutter which is supposedly not a bad load in it's own right. Another factor was that Kiesler's online had them for like $12 a box so I stocked up when the opportunity occured.

Jeff...Hey, just curious. Is the 1705 FPS a chrono figure you got or OEM RBCD data? Hell, I wonder what their 357 would be like? Yee haaaa. Shoot well

Boring, I guess - - -

- - -But I use the factory load proven for years to have really good efficiency - -

Either Rem or Win 158 LSWCHP-- In two, three, four, or six-inch revolvers. It has no bright, shiny gilding metal, nor somber, spooky, tactical black coating, nor even navy blue nylon.

It is just accurate, easy to control, and has worked successfully in thousands of incidents over the past 30 years. I prefer a bigger bore, but, hey, . . . .:)

Best,
Johnny

Smith & Wesson 042 in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster.

Carry ammo was Federal Nyclad 125-gr. +P HPs, but that's almost impossible to find these days.

So I switched, as an interim measure, to Winchester 125-gr. +P SJHPs.

I want to run some of these through a Fackler box to test expansion and penetration, but haven't been able to do so yet.

I suspect, though, that I'll end up carrying something else.

In a Smith Mod 638 Bodyguard.....

I tote Georgia Arms Gold Dot 110gr JHP+P's. Why? really nice controllable recoil for follow-up shots and excellent accuracy at close range.

But .......BUT, I'm also an advocate of the faster/lighter ballistics and am looking at RBCD. By the way, their .357 magnum loads clock out at around 2,000 FPS and near 500 lbs of energy.

Eric, those are published figures, not chrono'd out of my gun. I do not know what barrel length he used for the .38 Spec. Keep in mind that RBCD is loaded to standard pressure for use in any gun. There are no +P or +P+ loads available.

My older, always / anywhere S&W Model 38 Bodyguard is stoked with standard velocity Federal Nyclad 125 Grain Hollow points.

My wifes 4 " S&W Model 10 heavy barrel has 158gr LSWHP's in the +P variety. Whatever is on sale.
