SPAS-12 Safety ????

Hi,

I own a Franchi SPAS-12. I don't shoot it much, because she's a difficult girl (She doesn't cycle with standard 2" 3/4 shells and doesn't eat 3" either) so, I end up only feeding her with expensive 36grams hunting loads - But that's another story.

My question is, does anybody here heard something about this gun eventualy fire when you switch the safety on ?

I heard that this gun has a serious security issue about the safety lever.

Never heard about someone who acctualy saw that happens, only people who heard about it.

I have my gun for years now, and, if it's true, I think the gun puts lifes in danger, and Franchi should be sued for that.

So, anybody nows anything about that ?

Yes, this is true. All of the old lever-style safeties used on the SPAS-12, LAW-12, and SAS-12 shotguns are defective, every single one of them. They all left the factory working perfectly and if they haven't already started doing it, they will eventually. What happens is the the internal parts wear in a way that eventually the shank of the safety lever starts to trip the sear and fire the gun, even with no pressure on the trigger. Franchi didn't know about this at first and as soon as they found out they did a factory recall of all the guns, where they replaced the orginal trigger group with a new one that has a crossbolt safety, lika a Remington M870. This wasn't until the late 80s/early 90s and by the time the word got out about the recall, the SPAS-12 was banned from importation to the US and the company that handled the imports went out of business. Weather or not that effects you, Franchi stopped making the SPAS-12 in 1995 and was bought out by Beretta not too long ago, so it's pretty much impossible to get the new-style safety anymore, regardless of where you live. Sorry.

I had my SPAS 12 go full auto after one trigger pull. I pulled my finger off the trigger and it still dumped the magazine full auto. Lots of fun but pretty scary.
 
How much does a SPAS go for nowdays?
Could have had the SAS 12 (PG stock, Auto only, 18" or so) for 300, always kicked myself over not grabbing it up.
 
Well, this safety issue really bugs me.

I can't sell the gun, 'cause it was a present. I'll keep using it in the range, and I'll try to not use the safety.
