Just thought I'd share a story from last evening...
I spent yesterday hunting, mixed with a little mid-afternoon informal target shooting. I was on my way home, headed south on the Interstate. The cruise control on my small pickup was set at 69 MPH. The speed limit was 70 MPH. Just before my exit, I passed a state trooper parked in the median. I only caught a glimpse of his car, as it was in the shadows and no lights were on. At the time, I was just about to be passed by another vehicle. Next thing I knew, I saw blue lights in my rearview mirror, and the other vehicle had slowed down and fallen in behind me. I was at my exit by this time, so I took the off ramp, followed by the other vehicle, and the state trooper. When I pulled over to the side of the road, the other vehicle passed me and continued on, while the state trooper pulled behind me and stopped.
At the time, I had two rifles and one pistol in cases behind me in the extended cab area. Next to the gear shift was my SP101, holstered. I rolled the window down, and placed my hands on the steering wheel. I didn't have a guilty conscience, just wanted to make his job as easy as possible. When he got to the window, he said something to the effect of, "Good evening, sir." I replied, "Good evening, officer, just so you know, I have a concealed carry permit, and I have a pistol here in the cab with me." He checked where it was with his light, and thanked me for mentioning it to him. He then mentioned that he'd stopped me for going 85 MPH! I know I must have looked surprised when I told him that I had the cruise control set on 69 MPH. His reply kind of surprised me... He said that he had appreciated me being honest with him about the handgun, so he was going to be honest with me and admit that he hadn't been 100% sure whether it was my truck or the other vehicle (NY plate) that had been going 85 MPH. So, he bid me a good evening, and we parted. Happy ending for me! Don't know if the speedy New Yorker took a hint and slowed down or not.
As a postscript... the officer, who appeared very young, could not have been more polite and professional. If you feel that it wasn't really about "honesty", then perhaps he may have been thinking more along the lines of me being "straightforward" or "upfront" about the handgun. In any case, I appreciated the fact that he admitted his mistake, and that he went out of his way to make me feel totally at ease as well. With the recent shooting of the police officer in Blacksburg, I'm reminded of how those in his line of work put their lives on the line everyday, and I pray for his safety and that of all LEOs.
