Spared a Ticket Due to CCW

Just thought I'd share a story from last evening...

I spent yesterday hunting, mixed with a little mid-afternoon informal target shooting. I was on my way home, headed south on the Interstate. The cruise control on my small pickup was set at 69 MPH. The speed limit was 70 MPH. Just before my exit, I passed a state trooper parked in the median. I only caught a glimpse of his car, as it was in the shadows and no lights were on. At the time, I was just about to be passed by another vehicle. Next thing I knew, I saw blue lights in my rearview mirror, and the other vehicle had slowed down and fallen in behind me. I was at my exit by this time, so I took the off ramp, followed by the other vehicle, and the state trooper. When I pulled over to the side of the road, the other vehicle passed me and continued on, while the state trooper pulled behind me and stopped.

At the time, I had two rifles and one pistol in cases behind me in the extended cab area. Next to the gear shift was my SP101, holstered. I rolled the window down, and placed my hands on the steering wheel. I didn't have a guilty conscience, just wanted to make his job as easy as possible. When he got to the window, he said something to the effect of, "Good evening, sir." I replied, "Good evening, officer, just so you know, I have a concealed carry permit, and I have a pistol here in the cab with me." He checked where it was with his light, and thanked me for mentioning it to him. He then mentioned that he'd stopped me for going 85 MPH! I know I must have looked surprised when I told him that I had the cruise control set on 69 MPH. His reply kind of surprised me... He said that he had appreciated me being honest with him about the handgun, so he was going to be honest with me and admit that he hadn't been 100% sure whether it was my truck or the other vehicle (NY plate) that had been going 85 MPH. So, he bid me a good evening, and we parted. Happy ending for me! Don't know if the speedy New Yorker took a hint and slowed down or not. :)

As a postscript... the officer, who appeared very young, could not have been more polite and professional. If you feel that it wasn't really about "honesty", then perhaps he may have been thinking more along the lines of me being "straightforward" or "upfront" about the handgun. In any case, I appreciated the fact that he admitted his mistake, and that he went out of his way to make me feel totally at ease as well. With the recent shooting of the police officer in Blacksburg, I'm reminded of how those in his line of work put their lives on the line everyday, and I pray for his safety and that of all LEOs.

Honesty is pretty much the way to go when stopped for minor things like speeding. It's saved me a lot of money over the years.
You know your caught, deal with it. I've been nailed for speeding a few times, and there's only one time I got hit for a huge fine. And even that state trooper was polite. He had NO sense of humor, but he was plolite.
That one was on I-95 in N.C. I was in a rental Ford Aerostar van doing 85 and decided I had to pass the guy in front of me. Hit the gas, edged around him, and my passenger said-"your doing 100. And there's a cop."
Took the ticket, took the charge of reckless driving (3 points), local lawyer over the phone, $500, and went on my way.

Funny. Enterprise still rents me cars.

Get pulled over, admit it and take your lumps like a man, politely. They will often let you off with a warning. The whiners and bigmouths get big tickets.

Yes he should of never stopped You if he was not 100% sure I'n the first place but any how I guess by your response he felt he could have stopped wrong person and admitted his mistake and went on. At least I'n the end he did what was right and was nice.

Funny... An awful lot of us - dare I say a resounding majority in this and related threads - had positive resolutions. Yet, he just got lucky...

Funny, I've been stopped a couple of times for speeding, and every time I've disclosed that I have a CCW and every time I've been let off with just a warning to slow down a bit. TWICE we discussed what kind of gun I had, why I selected that one, and the necessity of carrying while travelling. Interesting.

I dont get pulled over much but when I do I always put my hands in view usually on the steering wheel and inform the officer that I am carrying. I have always been honest and nice and have been let go more than I have been ticketed.
These guys have a tuff job at times. I just cooperate and be courtious and try to make it go as smoothly as possible. Dont really want to add to their stress.

As they say, attitude is everything.

You may or may not know, but cops can and do mark the citation with an unofficial code known by him and the judge. Jerks get bigger fines.

"but cops can and do mark the citation with an unofficial code known by him and the judge."

Do tell ! Is this just a Texas thing, or all states? What is the secret code, anyway?

If you do ever get a ticket go fight it in court. It will save high insurance premiums and you may just get out of any fines.

to the last two posts, I dont know about marking them but you do have a comment section on the back of Judges copy and if someone is a jerk you can put the attitude or alot of times I will also put they were very respectable and the Judge can and does give them a break (maybe a 50% or whatever they choose, its up to the Judge). And as far as fighting it in court, I dont know about the insurance company but usually if the officer doesnt show, they'll dismiss the ticket but the Judge will try to set the date with the officer so he/she can be there. The object is write a citation that is not questionable and the whole thing is taped via dashcam, video will also be a court and should not be a problem to charge person if indeed its a legit citation. Again, everyone does this or that from time to time. Some on purpose and some strickly accidental. Officers should know this and try and judge accordingly. I may stop 30 vehicles a night and usually write 3-4 citations and could write all and theyd still be legit.
