Of course there are going to be variations, but of the commonly available factory .357 loadings I've never heard of one producing less than 1,100FPS or much over 1,300FPS. from a 2" barrel. Typically the lighter bullets (IE: 110gr) the fastest. The heavier (IE: 158gr) are slowest. In my opinion, all are about equally effective (fast & light vs. heavy & slow = about a wash). The faster ones tend to kick less, but produce more flash & noise. The slower ones produce a bit less flash and noise (though I really haven't noticed that much difference myself) and a bit more kick.
In a small frame .357 the recoil (kick) factor is my biggest concern. And I think the SP101 is the smallest of the small frame .357's most people can shoot with any degree of comfort and with realitive speed & accuracy. I'll tell you that if I could only pick one, it would be 125gr SJHP, preferably from Federal. This load in my Hogue gripped 2.25" SP shoots about like a somewhat larger & heavier K frame S&W. Though in a small dark room setting one off could be likened to a stun grenade (same for any .357 round or gun). So definately an "outdoors" gun without appropriate hearing protection and moderately good lighting.
