SP101 mods

Hi all-haven't been around much, because I've been on the road.

Anyway, you may recall that I recently bought an SP101 and that I took it to the range. Reasonably accurate, but had a DA trigger pull that required two men and a small boy to complete.

I took the gun into a gunsmith named Kevin Jones in Yuba City (about 45 miles from here) and asked him to work on it. I got the gun back last Sunday and haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, BUT...here's what I had done:

Smooth internals, but NO lightening of the springs.

Remove SA sear (make gun DAO).

Remove hammer spur.

The trigger pull, while still heavy, is now manageable. The gun is DAO and Kevin did beautiful bevel job at the top of the hammer where he removed the spur. He did a really nice job on the gun and I'm very pleased. The whole magilla cost me about a hundred bucks. Yeah, I know it's not a Smith, but it's built like a Russian tractor and I anticipate being able to fire lotsa +Ps and mag rounds through it without wearing it out real soon.

Next stop-range....

Sounds interesting!

Any more info as to what "smooth internals" means?

I am thrilled with the Wolf spring on my GP. but have not done anything to my SP yet. Eager to hear more.

Put Wolffs in mine too, still reliable but much improved. Lots of dry firing helped too.
Also added a Trijicon front sight and Hogue grips, love that gun!

Had mine smoothed out as well by Mike LaRocca. He recommended NOT changing the springs since it is my carry gun. I know what you mean by "it's not a Smith". When I bought it, I had fully intended to get a K frame .357, but the stock grips on this are very comfortable, and more importantly, the sights come up unbelievably.

Hi guys...

"Smooth internals" means a light going-over of the internal surfaces in order to remove burrs, rough spots and gnitches that create trigger pull mayhem. The difference this little work can do can be quite amazing. My 681 has the factory springs, but had the internal smoothing done and the trigger is extremely smooth and consistent for the entire pull.

The SP101, because it has a coil mainspring, will never have the smooth pull of a K, L or N-frame Smith, but it is noticeably smoother and more consistent than factory-new.

Malpaso, I know what you mean. Because this is intended as a carry gun, I specifically avoided lightening or changing the factory springs. And you're right, the gun points very well and the grips are very well designed and absorb mag round energy very efficiently.

Didn't get to the range this weekend. I'll try next weekend and get back to you.

Duh, whats "Trijicon??"

SK: Explain Trijicon sights, please. Is this a modification whereby you can add tritium 3-dot style night sights to a revolver?

Yeh, I know, my ignorance is showing but wouldn't it be a nice upgrade to bring revolver sights up to semi-auto standards?

I've heard of folks custom-installing tritium "Big-dot" sights to the newer lightweight Smith and Wesson J-frames.

22lovr,

I believe what SK is saying is that he had just a single Tritium nite sight "vial" installed in the factory front sight of his SP 101, rather than a "3 dot" set up.
