SP101 Grip Change

I'm looking to change out the factory grips and am looking for something similar to a Taurus or S&W shaped rubber grip - any suggestions?

I too have the Hogue finger groove rubber grips. You wouldn't believe the improvement - especially shooting .357's. The factory grips are fine for .38's - but too small for .357. The Hogue's give you a lot more to hang onto and not that much larger than the factory grips. They are also natural pointers. Really saves the middle finger that takes a beating on the trigger guard with .357's - as well as soreness in the palm. And, you can actually accurately rapid fire (sort of) .357's and hit what you're pointing at within 30 feet. Try that with any other small frame .357.

The only downside is rubber tends to catch clothing (printing). So I'm thinking of going with a slicker finished Hogue wood grip. Just trying to decide on light or dark wood (leaning to light wood to compliment the stainless frame).

Try a set of the rubber grips - they're only about $15.00. If you like them, the beautiful wood grips will set you back $70 to $150 depending on what you get (the more exotic the more expensive). They are all cut the same though for the SP. In my opinion, the Hogue grip is the ONLY grip for the .357 SP 101.

Had Hougues on mine, felt good. It wears a pair of Uncle Mikes boot grips now. Haven't had a chance to get it to the range so I can't say how these grips handle 357 recoil. They do make the gun easier to conceal though

Poohgyrr: If needed the ruger can be used for a club, and still come out ok. Try that with your ultra-scandi-ti-aluminum smith, not a good idea.:p :D

My always gun is an sp101. IMHO that third finger groove is mandatory for proper recoil control. Mine wears the rubber houges. Yes they are slightly harder to conceal, and they can grab clothing. But when I get ahold of it, you would have to break my wrist to take it away.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions! Guess I'll have to try both the Boot and the Hogue. Sounds like a compromise: concealability vs. controllability?

Butler Creek Boot grip..the smallest and IMO, the best grip for the SP101. It shoots better and has less recoil than the OEM. Still gives you plenty of grip for 125gr Full House loads. If it only had the CTC laser in it...it would be perfect :D
Shoot well

I have Uncle Mike's boot grips on my 101. Much easier to conceal, changes recoil feel (better for me). With these grips I can conceal a 101 in the front pocket of my jeans with no problem. I'm really sold on these grips.

I gues I'm the exception here because I like the factory grip on my SP101. I tried Uncle Mike's boot grip and Hogue but liked the factory grip better.

Another vote for factory grip.
If recoil's a problem try Magnaporting, really makes a differance.

I also went with the Hogue grips. It does make the gun harder to conceal but it makes for much easier shooting.

I JUST bought a Hogue grip for my SP101. WOW... what a difference from the factory ones! Definitely bigger, and the tacky feel of the grip eats up a lot of recoil, I haven't tried 357's out of them (yet) but from the difference between them and the factory grips, I think they should do much better on the 357's...

You can get them in hard nylon also I think, if you want to carry it for CCW.. The gun is built like a tank.. I can group less than 2" with them on .38SplSWC; which is incredible for a fixed sight 2" snubbie...

The Hogue's feel great, and once you get a good grip on it, yep, you'd have to cut the wrist off to get it from my hands also. There were a few articles a while back about how snubbies are great defensive guns, possibly the most difficult to wrestle out of people's hands.. I have friends that hate revolvers, but a few after shooting with them, had to admit they were pretty awesome.

My SP101 was loaded with 125Grain JHP 357Mags, that was what was by the night stand for 2 years :D No worries about magazine fatigue etc... I love revolvers..

Looking at those pictures I reflected "man that SP101 is a purty thing!" I think I will go fondle mine right now.

I find the factory grips adequate, but mine is a .38 so I don't have that .357 recoil to deal with. And my hands are small so the smaller factory grips seem to fit me just right.

It is just a gorgeous little gun!

Took mine out and shot it for the first time with the Uncle Mikes boot grips today. Was able to get a good grip and control, however it sure doesn't cushion against recoil like the Hogue. Only shot about 25 rounds and my hand was stinging pretty good.

Funny how talking about a familiar gun can give a renewed appreciation for it. :)

Well, I ordered the Uncle Mike's a couple days ago so it should be arriving soon. While shopping (online) I noticed a Pachmyr grip, too, that was unique looking. Also checked out some wood grip prices and they ranged from mid 50s and up for pricing - sure like the look of 'em, the idea of not snagging clothes, but don't know if I'd look forward to pulling the trigger.

With so many votes for the Hogue, I will probably pick that one up, too, as I like the idea of inexpensive-but-big-improvement-type things.

I like my SP a lot - nice size, good round, solid package. :)
