Sp[eaking of Dubya Bush, which running mate is best?

I have to say I think the Nebraska senator guy OR the Pennsylvania governor guy would either one be a much better choice than the OK governor (Keating).

The Nebraska guy will pull in McCain folks, and the Penn guy will pull in pro-choice Repubs and moderates. Keating won't do anything to help Bush. Yeah, he's Catholic, but so is the Penn gov.

I don't think the "Catholic" label is a big deal in American politics anymore.

I'd like to see Keyes as his running mate. Then I'd be able to vote for him. If he's smart though, he'll go for a Northeast moderate. He'll pull strong in the South and Southwest but he'll be weakest in California and the NE. Politically speaking, a NE VP candidate will probably get him more votes than a CA VP Candidate.

I'd like to see Rep. Chris Cox (CA) or Sen. Fred Thompson (TN) as W's veep. Cox is smart, articulate, conservative, knows where the skeletons are buried at Energy, and would make a good President in the event of...? His GOA rating of C is par for California; it might even get better with the right advice.

Fred Thompson is conservative, Presidential in demeanor, knows where the campaign-finance scandal skeletons are buried, can help bring in the McCain voters, and could make Gore fight for his home state. His GOA rating (B) is strong, and his lack of marital involvement might fuel media interest in his libido, but not his fidelity.

I'm not convinced a pro-choice Catholic brings us much, either practically or philosophically. Would that person pull in pro-choicers, or turn off hard-core Catholics? What other ideological dichotomies is this person harboring?

It seems obvious that party leadership ought to share that Party's platform. Let's not let the Republican Presidential platform collapse under the weight of conflicting ideologies.

Keyes. People who know Bush is a fool will be able to vote for him, knowing that his running mate is way, way smarter.

It's a display of courage.

Is Watts 35 yet? (Sorry, I was not an OK football fan...) Good person, but probably not as well-rounded as I would like to see as a potential Prez... (Keep in mind; Tyler, A. Johnson, Arthur, T. Roosevelt and Truman all inherited their offices with 6 months or less experience as VP.)

Powell has said repeatedly and believably that he doesn't want the job. Not surprising... I would MUCH rather see Powell as Secretary of State, or maybe Defense.

I just don't see Keyes as much of a President. I'd guess he'd take more of a "my way or the highway" approach. Which is not always a bad thing. I'd like to see Keyes as Ambassador to the UN. It would not hurt my feelings if the UN found itself without its key policeman and financier.

Chris Cox (R-CA) for veep.

SAG: Cox might get better with the right advice, but he's not going to get that advice from a guy who's promising to defend the "assault weapons" ban, and enact new gun control laws. Bush, honestly rated, is an "A" in terms of past performance, but a "D" in terms of current promises. Meaning, he was only pro-gun because he was running in Texas, not because he's personally pro-gun.

Keating. Doesn't add much to the ticket, doesn't hurt it, and GOA gives him a A+ rating.

Wait, I take that back; He DOES add to the ticket, in that with Keating as his running mate, Bush would start to look less like the lesser of two evils, and more like a friend. Can't hurt a Republican to have both the NRA and Right to Life enthusiastic about you!

Besides, a few months into their administration, we could arrange a little "accident" for Bush, and have the President of our dreams... (Note to Secret Service: Just joking!)

"Keating. Doesn't add much to the ticket, doesn't hurt it, and GOA gives him a A+ rating."

I'm just concerned that the media will begin feeding off that "Keating 5" unpleasantness from a few years back. Lack of substance was never a hindrance for the media, if it wanted to cast aspersions on a (generally Republican) candidate. I suspect that the only reason it was not raised during the McCain run was that the media wanted McCain instead of GW.

Ummmmm... different Keating. Unfortunate to have the same name. Kinda like Nixon, or, very soon, Clinton.

How about Linda Chavez? The Reagan appointee has good conservative instincts, and is both female and Hispanic. I don't remember her stand on the Second Am. but she was on the money about bilingual education. Wouldn't she swing some Hispanics and women to the ticket? And what leftist could really go after a Hispanic woman?

I think a woman candidate would be extremely smart. The Demos have been pulling in the soccer mom vote but I know that most women of my acquaintance who are Demos and liberal would jump ship and vote Republican just to get a woman elected to the second highest office. They are as one-issue as we are --- just a different issue :). That could lock it up for GWB.

I agree, plus a female running mate really gives him the "looking forward" image that seems to swing a lot of independent voters.

Futo: I agree about Dole. And as much as I think Hupp would be a good choice, JimD, Bush has to pick someone from another state, probably from the northeast as Jack suggested.
