SP-101 questions.

Y'know how you can go your whole life without hearing a word, and then, after you first hear it, it's all over the place? I was barely aware the Ruger SP101 existed, until last Saturday when LSW and I took her father shooting for his birthday.

And he has an SP101.
At first he shot like the squid he was. :D Just kidding, guys. He shot like he hasn't practiced at all in years, which he admitted. As he worked his way through the first of the boxes we bought him, he improved greatly. Giving up on DA and going with SA may have helped, too. The sights and DA trigger pull don't help at all, and even the SA pull seemed a bit hefty, even to me. (But I'm a 1911 guy, with a well-broken-in CA Bulldog .44 for backup, so what do I know?)

(Perhaps I should mention that my father-in-law was in Navy boot camp when the Japanese Imperial Navy paid it's little social call on Pearl Harbor. He had two brothers who were there...)

Today LSW and I took over some Bright Sights paint, bright green and white, to try and enhance the sights. Does anyone make a replacement front sight suitable for this revolver? Fiber optics, maybe?

Now to try and do something about the trigger pull. I note that Brownell's sells Wolff spring kits for SP101s--anyone have experiance with them? If so, which one(s) do you recommend? Given a manual and average mechanical aptitude, can the average guy (i.e. me) install them himself?
Does anyone else make a similar product? Better, worse, differant?

TIA

The 101 is one of my most favorite guns. Here is what I did to mine:
Uncle Mike's boot grips (the short ones) - it changes the way the gun recoils and it allows the gun to fit in front pocket of jeans
I put the Wolf spring kit in, used the lightest springs and got 2 or 3 misfires so I changed the main spring to the next to lightest (10# if I remember right), this absolutely does wanders for the quality of shooting
I have also found the front sight needs to be touched up with cold blue on a fairly regular basis if you carry it.
That's it. I regularly practice with mine from up close and personal out to 50 yards and it does a great job. It will shoot any load you have the guts to drop the hammer on and ask for more. I choose it over all other snubbies.
Mine is in 357 and I just love it.

ruger sp 101

I own 2 sp 101's...........you can buy a Trijicon night sight for 38 bucks from arizonagunrunners. then paint all around it with orange nail polish

I have an SP101 with a CTC Laser Grip. Ive thought about getting a Trijicon Front sight as Ive also entertained the idea of a nice wood grip...like a Secret Service and wont have my Laser.
I also have a model 60 which I like, but like the SP a little more.
Get one when you can...youll like it.
Shoot well

The springs are a piece of cake to install. I've put them in all my Ruger wheelguns.
One problem that may arise - too light a trigger return spring will sometimes cause the gun to 'hang up' when cocking the hammer for single action shooting. I had to go back with the factory spring because of it in my SP.
I also put the Trijicon front sight on it - about $35 from Midway USA.
If you get the springs and have any problems, post here or send me an e-mail.
