South Carolina Schools & Gun Safety Classes

In the South Carolina Legislature two Bills are being proposed that would require schools to include a Second Amendment curriculum teaching not only gun safety, but also gun rights. One supporter state Rep. Bill Herbkersman, R-Bluffton said "I think having gun safety education in the schools is probably a great idea, because the curiosity about them is always going to be there for kids. Some kids have been taught gun safety at home by their parents, but others don't have that knowledge or foundation."

Personally I think including gun safety in schools is probably a good idea since many kids don’t get those lessons at home. I do wonder how the teaching of gun rights might be handled and if the specific teachers might slant things in an anti-gun manner.

So, what do you think? Should schools be required to teach gun rights and gun safety? Do any other States currently require this?

Back in the late 60's and very early 70's I had the (mis)fortune of attending (I hated it and after a couple years, went back to public school) a private college prep school, and they had a rifle team which I was on. It seemed that most of the private schools in the area (Philly) also had teams that we competed against. Unfortunately, shooting sports have been discontinued at those schools. Later, in college, the phys ed courses included rifelry as well as fencing & archery. I wouldn't be surprised if those 'weapons' courses are discontinued as well. (I just tried a search and couldn't find them listed.)

Those kinds of things are all of the past. They probably run afoul of GFSZ laws in place nowadays.

Anyway, to answer the OP, I don't have a problem with teaching gun safety in schools, but schools should voluntarily offer it as an elective without having to be required, as long as there's enough of an interest to make it worthwhile. As far as gun rights, maybe that should be covered as part of a civics curriculum. Oh, wait....they don't teach that anymore, do they.

We teach sex ed and drivers ed, why not. I know several schools here in GA that offer hunter education classes as part of the curriculum. To my knowledge none are required.

Should schools teach gun safety? Sure.

Should it be required by law, along with "a Second Amendment curriculum teaching... gun rights?" I don't think so. The latter, in this day and age, is a political issue, and I don't think politicizing public schools is a good idea.

I'd like to see them required to teach critical thinking, which might serve the same purpose; but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know about SC, but a lot of places require sex education in public schools. I think if the educational system is going to butt into parental responsibilities like that, it's far more important to teach the kids the truth about the Second Amendment and firearms safety than it is to teach pre-teens how to procreate.

To have gun safety as a separate course sends the message that guns are the major threat to our school age children when the stats don't say that and has already been mentioned that politicizes the course. There are many threats that they are in much more danger from.

I do think it could or maybe should be part of health and/or other classes where the general health and welfare of them as individuals is taught.

Her reply mirrors my attitude on this subject. ..... :)

I teach Hunter Safety that is a state's requirement for obtaining a Hunting license but the is a different situation. When I teach, I take care not to glorify and firearm but do encourage being informed about the 2A and the rest of "Our" Constitution. .... ;)

Be Safe !!!

I agree. In 2010, the Virginia legislature passed a bill that allowed schools to implement the Eddie Eagle program if they so chose. Critics threw a fit. Claims were made that children "who aren't old enough to pack their lunches yet will soon start learning about packing heat."

Bear in mind that Eddie Eagle doesn't involve using firearms at all, and only teaches children to leave the firearm alone and find an adult to deal with it.

If something as helpful and innocuous as Eddie Eagle generates a firestorm of controversy, imagine a measure that teaches actual gun rights.

And so it goes !!!

The Eddie Eagle has been around for many years now and locally, we had our foot in the door and were actually down to doing some scheduling. Then the door went shut and that was that. Some parents actually thought that we would be bringing AR's into the classroom. ....

Be Safe !!!
